Oh yes, there is in fact such thing as "contraband lunchmeat." In what is reported to be the largest bust of bologna ever at the Santa Teresa, New Mexico point of entry, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 35 rolls of the pork product (385 pounds!!) from a Ciudad Juarez resident. That's enough for about 4,000 sandwiches.

Although bologna is more likely considered a mild lunchmeat rather than a hot black market item, it is prohibited to bring it into the country. Since bologna is made from pork, it has the potential to introduce foreign animal disease to the U.S. pork industry, Santa Teresa Port Director Grace Gomez told KOAT. She expands, "This seizure really stands out because when we seize bologna it is usually a small quantity or at most a roll or two."

This recent seizure is not actually Guinness World Record worthy, however. In November 2003, 81 rolls of bologna (756 pounds!!) were seized in El Paso.

Other non-traditional food seizures include 10 tons of chocolate bonbons, bushmeat and 230 pounds of snails.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushmeat

the term is commonly used for meat of terrestrial wild animals, killed for subsistence or commercial purposes throughout the humid tropics of the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

I had heard of "hiding the salami" and "slipping someone the salami" but not "smuggling the bologna."
Ah, the euphemisms!

If it's like the time my old boss got caught with the months supply of Columbia's favorite export, they were caught with 15 tons, and were booked with 10.

I wonder if any of the border agents "sampled" some of the bologna?

BTW: Highest Jump by a Guinea Pig. AWSOME fun fact.; allergic to cats and dogs. Had Guinea pigs. Trainable, smart, and will come when called.

10 tons of chocolate Bon-Bons were confiscated?

A: I'd like to smell the warehouse (love the scent of chocolate.)

B: I'll bet there were more than a few housewives upset to hear that news.

Hey, I collect clocks. I've only got 30 of them, so not Guinness material.

Love bologna. I bet some of the Mexican stuff is pretty good.
