In 46 years, I've seen three bobcats. Two of them were today. These were young, not much larger than house cats. I thought one of them was going to let me take his picture, but as soon as he saw the camera he was gone.

I did get some really crappy video. Fast forward to about 3:40. They are hard to see but, there are two of them, playing on the edge of the road.

Looked just like this.

Trivia; a couple of years ago a mountain lion jumped up a similar side of a house here to the roof. Not a big deal - except he had an adult javelina in his mouth. Guess he wanted to dine with a nice view of the valley.

My great grandmother had some as pets. I use to chase them all over her property. Here is a tip don't reach into a wood pile after one.

I cat sat a pixie bob for about a year. It was 3/4 bobcat and weighed around 30-35 pounds. That thing had remarkable leaping abilities. Favorite thing to do was stalk you. Every morning you would go downstairs and not know where it was hiding. It would jump out, jump up and plant all four feet on your chest or back and try to knock you over. The only reason I had the cat was my buddy paid big money for it and ended up being allergic to it. A year of shots and he was at least able to live with it again. He never was able to fully enjoy the thing without sneezing and wheezing. It was a very very cool animal.

I remember ~20-years ago seeing an ad for someone selling bobcat kittens. Our school mascot is also a bobcat, so it seemed like a good idea at the time. Fortunately/unfortunately, they were ~$700 back then, so it never happened.

I do know there have been reports of bobcats back in our area recently. Oddly enough, I encountered an adult fox in the middle of town last night, in a snowstorm, in the middle of the highway with dinner in its mouth.

There have always been bobcats around here, you just never see them. To come across two young ones playing in the middle of the road was pretty cool. You just know mom was back in the woods somewhere watching.

We've seen a few up our way, but they are shy animals. I did have a friend who kept one as a pet (with canine teeth removed). It was a very aggressive play animal, almost scary, ok scary especially when it tried to grab the back of your neck and shake.

My grandfather bred them for pet stores back in the 50's. One time the big grey tomcat decided to give it a whirl with a female in heat and my dad ended up with a full sized grey tiger stripe pet bobcat.

There are pictures in the family album of 5 kids sitting in a row on a couch with a giant cat stretched out on their laps getting a ten hand petting.

I remember riding through the mountains in East Tennessee as a kid and seeing a Momma and 3 kittens. She squared up on the truck and started walking toward us. My Dad quickly turned off the headlights and turned them on about 30 seconds later and they were gone.

Still sticks with me all these years later.
