I don't reload a ton.  I just segregate the brass.  Haven't found it to be a problem.  But it's definitely something to be aware of.  laugh

I'm keeping the brass for now, but may hold off on loading it.  I remember how hard it was to get large pistol primers for a couple of years, so it may come in handy at some point.

I've been thinking about a 5.7 too, I haven't played around with it at all though either.

I was planning on going with the S&W option though

I know I'm really late on the Girsan HiPowers post, but I snagged a p35 match and it's really good. I would buy the remake of the HiPower before spending anything over a grand on an original HiPower though(unless it was one of the exceptions to the SBR rule)

I've been on a bit of a hiatus, added a Browning 49 gun safe, another AR, stumbled across a Norinco m14 from the few months they were available after the '94 AWB, and might be diving down the rabbit hole that is brass crafting for a French 11x59 Gras if it's still there when I have the fun budget again.

I got curious on weight for the two carry options I use. My decades old 1911 3" compact with 7+1 and a full size 8rd mag with a bianchi carrylok leather holster:

3lbs 1oz for 16 rds. Then I tried the new to me XD compact with my tlr1 knockoff with 10+1 and spare 10rd (13 rd coming soon) :

3 ounces more. Guess what 5 rounds of .45acp 230gr jhp weigh? 3 ounces. The kydex holster weighs 1.5 oz less than the bianchi leather so I'm basically carrying same weight load but more capacity, and more importantly, better ballistics with the 4" bbl over the 3". With the loads I carry that's around 80fps difference which translates to almost 100ftlbs of muzzle energy.

It's always interesting to look at the weight of the load out in relation to capability...

My old school carry was always a lightweight Commander with one spare mag.  The exemplar is a Kimber CDP Pro... 3lbs 2oz, 9+8 of .45 ACP

Over the last few years, I've migrated almost entirely to one of my P365s for daily carry, usually the P365XL.  2lb 9oz, 13+15 of 9mm

"High threat" carry is an M&P 2.0.  3lb 8oz, 18+17 of 9mm

The first two don't include a light, which the M&P has mounted (but I still carry a separate light), and the Kimber doesn't have a red dot.  The P365 is amazingly capable considering the size/weight of the package.  In dynamic drills, I can usually achieve the same accuracy as my M&P, and come very close on time.  The red dots give a big improvement in time/accuracy especially in low light.

I am still a 1911 guy, I shoot them very well and am the most comfortable with them of anything I've owned. But something a bit more modern is also nice. I cannot make myself carry anything but .45acp, partly because I'm too cheap to add a caliber and partly because I just like big bullets carrying a crap ton of energy. I'd love a 10mm with true 10mm hot loads but I have a new house, suspension and tires to pay for.

You should try one of those out of a 3" at night. Fireball rivals a .357 out of a 3".

got all the handguns out today. Put some more rounds through the XD. It shoots really well. Follow up shots are easy-ish. Accuracy is on par with my 5" 1911. Now time to clean.

Just plinking/fun... a pistol caliber will do for a lever gun. Personally, lever gun for me meant rifle cartridge caliber for large game capability along with better ballistics. Specifically wanted a 30-30 Win Marlin lever gun, and I picked up a nice used '91 Marlin 30AS safe queen for great price off GB a few years back.

I have put more into it than any of the AR builds, but was worth it... love how it shoots with the Skinner peep sight setup and I trust it a little more than the ARs.  Only things original on it are the receiver/bolt, barrel, and magazine tube - everything else has been changed/upgraded. WWG trigger and internal components really makes it a pleasure to shoot, hands down the best trigger of any gun I own... better than the single stage TriggerTech or the Blackout Defense ZERO triggers on my ARs. Stock Marlin trigger was as bad as a milspec AR trigger...too heavy, rough, and a bit gritty feeling.

Also replacing the stock safety with a Turnbull Customs safety replacement allows selection of either no safety or a hammer block with what looks like a factory screw... original design had no additional safety to half-cock for ~ 90 years... 1984 and on they began putting crossbolt safeties on the lever guns...

Top large 'screw' below hammer is the Turnbull safety replacement...simple 90 degree rotation with positive click between off and on... like an AR safety, but needs a flat-blade screwdriver...LOL. In normal off position:

And in locked/hammer block position:

Actually my 30AS is with me now out of state while doing some work for a friend as gun laws in this state kinda suck so didn't feel like bringing my 300BLK AR with 'illegal capacity' 20rd mags... lever guns more friendly and no issues in this too liberal state. Been here nearly a month and should be going back home soon.

this is more for plinking. Something cheaper than a 30 cal, but bigger than 22. If I ever actually sell my 556, I think a 357 is the fit.

LAst night was the monthly "EDC Carry match". Brought the new XD. I sucked, but the gun worked flawlessly. One stage was putting 10 rds in a dinner plate sized circle as quickly as possible from 12 yards. I was pleased to be able to cover all 10 rounds with my hand, even though 3 rode the edge and cost me 15 seconds. IT was a good time and it was definitely nice not having to do 2 and 3 reloads per round because of capacity lol.

I've been trying to make our local club "vintage" military 2 gun match for a while...  Guns have to be pre-1955 military issue (any country - replicas/reproductions OK), and have to be in 'armory' condition, i.e. no aftermarket sights, stocks, triggers, etc.  Rifles are 20 rounds at 100yds, bench or position of choice, and pistols 10 rounds standing at 10yds.  Today, I finally managed to make out out for the match.

For the rifle, I'm shooting a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser.

I'd only put 10 rounds through it before the match, so I wasn't expecting much.  Also our range faces south, making shooting open sights brutal in the winter with the sun low.  And the POI required a POA at 12 o'clock on the 8" bullseye, with the front sight obscuring the entirety of the bull.  Hard to be precise that way, and I'm already at a disadvantage to the Garand and 03A3 shooters with their aperture rear sights.  I managed to pull out 173/200, which I was pretty happy with.  I realized afterward that I should have moved the rear sight up and used a POA under the bull that would likely have been more precise.

On the pistol side, my Tisas 1911A1 was rockin' and I shot 100/100 - 6x which was good enough to win that string.  I still can't believe how good this thing is for $299...

For next time I hope to have a load worked up for the rifle and a better POA/POI solution.  A couple of the guys were in the 190s with the rifle, so I've got a ways to go.

Ok that is really cool!!  I wish we were not 3500 miles apart as I would love to join you all and bring out some of my older military stuff.

I think I would have started out with my K31 and one of my Hi Powers.

Or just to be weird I could pull out my Maadi and my P210.  The Masdi  would not win any accuracy contests but it is so fun to bring out.

I have other things. We could have a lot of fun!!!

Ohh I just realized with a 1955 date requirement technically I could bring out one of my Armalite rifles.   The AR10 was technically released in 1955.  Stretching the rules a bit (ok a lot)  I theoretically could bring out my Mars-H because it is an ar10 and it is in current use by some NATO countries. I would have to take the optics off it and run period correct hand guards, irons, grips and a mill spec trigger.  And at that point I would just use my Armalite.

EDIT:  Re reading you requirement. Pre 1955 and not including 1955 makes the AR10 an extreme stretch as they were designed in 1952-1953. Prototypes were out in use in 1954 and then full production started in 1955.   So would prototypes count?  😁

I was wrong on the date... 1950 not 1955.  And the firearm had to be issued for general service before that date, so no prototypes.  No modern stuff like ARs or even M1As.

I am not a gun guy, I've never owned one but I am not against them. I have considered having one regularly but never done it.
My neighbor is in his 80's and about to move into assisted living. We are pretty good to him and look after him. He offered me a .22 bolt action rifle today. How do I know if it's in working condition? Is there anything I need to check before deciding to accept this?

In reply to NY Nick :

You need to check your local laws about the requirements for firearms transfers between individuals.  NY is one of the most restrictive states for firearms ownership, so you want to be sure you're complying with the law.  A local gun shop should be able to provide guidance and assist with the transfer.  As far as working condition, a local shop can also recommend a gunsmith to evaluate the gun for you.

A quick Google tells me that you need to do the transfer via FFL (gun shop).  They do them all day long, so a quick call/visit should get you the details you need. It shouldn't be too terribly difficult. It doesn't look like any permit is needed for a long gun.

As far as functionality, if it "ran when parked" it probably still does. It'll need a good cleaning.  A bolt action .22 is a nice easy place to start. If you can share pics and/or any info you can find (name/model) the collective can probably help. It wouldn't be a bad idea at all to have someone check it out. You can purchase "snap caps" (dummy rounds) to test functionality.

I have a couple of .22s that my father got as a kid - he's 78. They sat for ~40 years and one was good to go with a cleaning while the other needed minor extractor work. It was my first experience with any sort of gun repair and it was very simple to figure out and repair.

I am a little late, but you need to figure out what the licensing requirements are for your state are for you to possess the rifle legally.  Once you get that sorted the rifle you are considering is a fun range plinker and more importantly, it is a memory.  For a guy to give you his rifle is no trivial thing.  I would be honored to take it no matter what it was.
