I love shooting my older stuff. Something about actually using a 100 year old rifle. They shoot/feel different.  But also they shoot so much like a modern rifle.  Some I think shoot better than some of my modern stuff.

I wish I had bought more MilSurp when they were cheap. My dad has a beaten Carcano that I'm considering trying to screw around with. I'm not a huge fan of them though

Czechmates are nice. Can see similarities between the two in shape a bit, though they do look fairly different. Able to build this Tisas for about $1100 (less optic)...$550 for pistol and about same for the parts. Grip module was nearly half of the extra expenses, even on clearance sale.

Shot the Tisas yesterday with the Underworld comp... definitely made a difference in recoil control for fast strings.   It's the first time I've owned something with a 'thumb ledge', so still working on that grip technique.  Still not a big fan of the 2011 grip.  If I can find a holster that doesn't cost too much I may try it at one of our tactical matches.

In other news, finally got a no-wind day and got our .17HMR dialed in.   It seems to like Hornady 20g XTP, and I'm starting to get some decent groups.  Group below is 1 MOA with the flyer, .3 MOA for the cluster of four.  Ammo continues to be the limiting factor... over 20 rounds I had an SD of 20 and extreme spread of 72.  And the average velocity was 130fps slower than the same box last week!  I think these 17s would be amazing with match quality ammo.  At least I was able to get the zero dialed in for 100yds and figure the dope for 200.

The I was able to get my hands on a Prodigy and the MAC 9 DS-D Comp. I feel like out of the 3 I'm looking at (Apollo11, The MAC 9 DS-D Comp, Prodigy), the Prodigy I liked the least. The other two were tied for 1st place, I'm unsure which I will get now. It will probably boil down to what the best deal I can find for them. It seems like my local shops had the MAC priced higher than they are priced online. I'm going to see if the BX will let me order one through them since they sell some Tisas and MACS on the website. Also, I get a decent discount at BassPro/Cabelas.

I shot a Glock 34 the other day day and I really liked it!!   It had a red dot of some sort on it.  A really accurate pistol.  It shot much better than any other Glock that I have ever shot.

I am shopping for my first pistol.

Today with what little attention span I have left I am thinking about a 2011 in 9mm.

Why a 2011?  Because I want a 1911 with a modern touch.

What to buy for a first gun is always a big question...  what's the primary mission?  Recreational shooting?  Getting into competition?  Home defense/carry?  The answer to that question should drive what you choose.

While there are some handguns that are very good all-purpose tools, many are designed to be good for one particular pursuit with features that make it less desirable for others.  While I am a big 1911 fan, many years as an instructor has shown me they aren't always a good choice for the new shooter.  That said, the 1911s of today are better than they have ever been; so now it's mostly a question of the manual safety, and the shooter's ability to operate it properly under stress.  The 2011 has a very large, squarish grip, that can be challenging if you don't have large hands.  I still struggle with mine, and prefer a standard 1911 (or S&W's M&P line for a double stack gun) for a serious defensive gun.  2011s are more expensive than the standard 1911 versions, though there are some good guns like the Tisas, and MAC discussed above that are pretty affordable and very good.

9mm is a good choice of caliber... it's effective as a defensive round, and relatively inexpensive for practice.

Find a range where you can rent a variety of guns, and spend the $$ to try a few... especially comparing the 2011 to something like an M&P/Glock or standard 1911.

I am lucky to be in a position where I have access to a wide range of pistols.

1.  Look at Canik.  They are a great first pistol.  Cheep with an excellent trigger.  I would recommend a Mete.  There is a full size and a compact.  As a first pistol for range and home defense I recommend the full size.  For carry the compact version is good but there are lots of other options in the compact and sub compact market these days.

2.  The smaller the pistol the harder it is to shoot well.  Go bigger especially if you are not going to use it for CCW.

I have to get to a meeting but I can make all kinds of recommendations to you depending on your use case.  With you liking the 2011 platform I am going to make the assumption you are wanting a full size pistol (a very good choice for a new shooter)

What is your budget?  That is a big thing for us to know to make recommendations.  I could recommend some excellent pistols but they are 2K.  I can also recommend some that are very good for around the $500 mark.  Knowing your budget will let us help you better.

Lastly no matter what we recomend you need to get what ever you are thinking of getting in your hands and even better try shooting it before you purchase.  What I like may not fit your hands.  What feels great in the hand may have a really flippy recoil (I am looking at you Walter).

Lastly welcome to the fun!!!!

The pistol would be for recreational shooting.  Maybe some fun competition.  I am hoping that I never need to daily carry.

Best thing if possible is to find a gun store with range that will let you try/rent out firearms. Lots of nice 9mms on the market... just need to figure out how much willing to spend and get some rental time on ones you're really considering. I will say after just getting into 2011 with the Tisas I really like how they feel though the grip is a tad small/would like it to fill my hand more. The RIA 10mm Ultra TAC HC (a DS 1911, not 2011) I also picked up is about perfect in grip size, but most people find it too big.

Nice thing I like about 2011 is trigger is better than anything striker fired, can tune them to get phenominal trigger pulls that most any other pistol simply can't match. They also are easy to work on - full dissassembly only requires one tool (a punch for the main-spring housing & hammer spring). Glocks may be simpler in parts count, but I find 1911/2011 easier to work on. Not to mention the instinctive/natural aiming of a 2011...simply points right where you want it to, very easy to find red dot consistantly with it. Recoil impulse is great and just seems to shoot better/easier than most any other platform.

Thing with going with a 2011 as first pistol is you will be spoiled...would kind of be like getting a Porsche GT3 RS/RSR for you're first track/race car....

For 9mm pistols I'd reccomend trying out 2011s, Walther PDP Pro X compact, CZ shadow 2, and Glock 34.

So what do we like for cheapish bolt action 22lr's? Thinking of having one around to use exclusivly with Colibri and Super Colibri stuff, it won't cycle an auto.

Savage Arms are good affordable rimfire bolt guns, B Series or Mark II. The preferred rimfire bolt guns here are Tikka T1X or CZ 457. Have you also though about a lever action 22LR?

Id prefer a bolt action but a lever gun is fine if I like it enough. A nice single shot would be cool too

I was at the range a while back and struck up a conversation with a couple guys a few lanes down and he offered me the opportunity to try his Canik.  I think it was the Mete.  I was super impressed by a pistol that at the time I had never heard of.

Canik is a solid option, with some caveats. Their triggers are fantastic. The Mete, SFX, and Rival all seem solid.

A few of their models have had a lot of issues though, the MC9 especially.

The new MC9L, MC9LS, and Prime seem like they might be doing better.

The TTI also seems to have a lot of issues.

Finally, as much as it saddens me to say, the Rival-S (steel frame) is known to have some issues, at least in certain production batches. I am about to be sending my Rival-S back for warranty work as it keeps double feeding and jamming on me. We'll see that happens there.

I would not confidently recommend anything other than the Mete SFX or the SFT.  The other seem to have issues.  It seems to have started when the moved there production to the USA.

I have a Mete sfx that was not made in the US.  It is an excellent pistol.  I would recommend it to anyone.  I use it in steel challenge and do very well with it.

I also have a TTI.  It is just ok.  Not bad but definitely not worth the 1K pricetag.  To me the mete is the best for the price.  They are around the $650 mark and I am sure with some looking you could get it in the $500.

Actually I found this Howa M1100 on Tacswap that's a pretty sweet deal: https://www.tacswap.com/post/67d213de70294a6499c7ce5d

Tacswap is pretty awesome, way better to sell things on than gunbroker as it's only $20 a year and you get 10 free postings a month. Only been on it less than 2 months and sold some items I needed to, also did some trades which worked out nice - ended up trading a Vltor M1A stock for a crossbow...
