A Florida mom is upset that a high school chemistry teacher gone bad is being sold in toy stores. The store defends the figurines by saying "It's clearly marked for 15 and older".

Thoughts?

Is the show rated for 15 and older or is it considered TV-MA?

Never seen a 15 year old in a Toys R Us.

Worth getting in a huff over? No. Poor choice on TRUS to stock them? Yeah.

It's just me, but I think it shows how pathetic our culture has become.

Disclaimer, I never watched a single minute of a single episode.

They sell MA games in the game section? Should they not do that? What about WWE toys? What about toy guns?
Should you not buy your 6 year old a meth cooking Walter White? Probably, but being offended because they sell them is a bit silly.

You should - it's excellent. You really want to know what happens to the main characters, but there's never any doubt that they are miserable, ruthless human beings.

Working retail years ago, I had a mom E36 M3 a brick becausewe sold her daughter and her daughters friends hats that said "pimp daddy's chicken shack" on them. She had the gall to claim her daughter had no idea what a pimp was. Her daughter was 16. There was no berkeleying way she didn't know. Parents like this aren't even in it for their kids, they're in it for whatever they can get out of it.

how come?

I've never watched either. But I recognize that characters in popular shows have consistently been Halloween costumes for a long time.

And as far as I can tell, the show isn't popular for the subject, it's popular for the writing. They try to use a lot of science based threads to run ideas- which is pretty cool. Badly written shows don't last long, on the other hand.

Not my cup of tea, but neither is/was Mad Men.

Your second sentence should be all that is said in court about this, right before the judge kicks her ass for wasting the judicial systems time. The sad thing is, that won't happen. The good news is, free publicity for the last freestanding toy store.

Don't be mislead to believe that this is a story of someone bettering his life through illegal activity. For every action that Walter takes to "better his life" he actually tears his life down that much more.

Darth Vader is a deadbeat dad.
Lots of those figures were sold and still continue to be sold.

Given that I could have parallel parked my car in her daughters cleavages, I doubt it.

At a marketing stand point it was a smart choice, perhaps not the most ethical. By this mother getting upset she is giving them free marketing. I am sure most people nowadays shop online and avoid trus except during the holidays, so their stand will probably bring in people that they do not normally get in their store.

For real. There's never a moment's doubt they are scumbags, it's the journey there that's important. Like Vince Gilligan said, 'I wanted to start with Mr Chips and turn him really really bad'. The way others get sucked in around Walt shows how things can incrementally get worse till it's too late to back out.

Toys R' Us did show some poor judgment, though. It's definitely an adult show, not their target audience.

Saw this on the news last night..........aside from the obvious, 2 things struck me:

  • Walter White doll, er, action figure -- $21!!!!! Doubt little junior is going to the toy store to buy these with his allowance.

  • Right next to the Breaking Bad action figures were the action figures for Sons of Anarchy!! Nobody gotta beef with action figures for a TV show about a motorcycle gang? Momma better get busy with her lawyer -- there's a lot of stuff in Toys R Us that needs to be cleaned up!!!!!

And oh yeah -- Breaking Bad is awesome for all the reasons above, plus -- it's great the second or third time around just to watch for the cinematography. A lot of thought goes into how the scenes are set up, filmed, etc.

Meh. I watched two seasons of it on netflix because everyone said "blarglhlggbestestshowevarzzzzz" but got bored with it pretty quickly. I can't say there was anything particularly great about it at all. Since I am the only person in the universe to feel that way I have to assume that it is me that is lacking somehow. I saw enough to know it is probably not for kids though - even 15yr olds.

edit: It does amaze me that someone put a deal together to make and sell action figures from that. Who did they think the market was? Does anyone over the age of 6 play with action figures?

In a day when a 1st grader gets sent home for making a thumb-forefinger gun, maybe a guy in rubber gloves carrying a pistol is a bit much. Wussification, do-gooderism gone wild? Probably.

I would have one on my monitor at work ......

On a Halloween related tangent- I dressed as a hobo a few times as a kid for Trick-or-Treating. Torn shirts, fake bruises and all.

hm..

You haven't been to seattle lately. The place is literally overrun with homeless people. It wasn't a dig. It was the truth. I walk 5 blocks bus stop to work and pass 10 people sleeping on the ground or park benches.

I'm trying to figure out what part of this is our culture falling apart. I never watched, so really can't judge the actual writing.

Back in the 50's- married couples on TV slept in separate beds. Even into the 60's. The level of offense in shows like Leave it to Beaver and Andy Griffen were nothing.

This isn't going back to that.

And if it's being fascinated with bad guys- Darth Vadar. Very very bad guy. But nobody seems to have a problem with people dressing up like that fictional character. A little kid can dress like one and start a VW in a commercial, and nobody minds.

Is he ok because his fictional character is much less possible than the Breaking Bad bad guys?

Vadars guys blew up an entire planet- killing them all. I'm sure the BB guys didn't do that bad.

But it's ok for a toddler as Vadar but not this guy.

Interesting.
