OK I was a little stunned to take my daily look though on BaT today to find that a 2003 Subaru Outback, 3.0 LL Bean edition is listed on auction. My SWMBO owned one of these in the exact same configuration and color, since replaced, with about 140K more miles on it. Seeing the pictures made me immediately miss our first road trip vacation, but I can't help thinking anyone bidding on this over where it is now might do better to go pick up a new Crosstrek or Outback.

Quite a different package from the current mini-SUV Outback or the shorter Crosstrek. I really like that generation of Subaru wagon. It's just right. My parents owned the non-Outback version for years, and the size of the new Outback and lack of a Legacy wagon had them looking elsewhere when it was time to replace.

So yeah, I can see someone choosing this over a new Outback.

It depends on how much higher the bid goes, but with the apparent strong resale values of Subarus, you may be right. When I decided I wanted a Crosstrek last year, I wound up deciding to buy a new one relatively quickly as most of the lightly used examples in my area were not that much cheaper.

P.S. The Crosstrek really does have considerably less cargo space than this Outback. That lack of space behind the rear seats is the one thing that has disappointed me a little during my ownership so far.

I just sold a very nice 2003 Legacy gt with the winter package and a manual for 2700. No rust, but needed a fair bit of love, timing belt and struts. Headgaskets or valve cover gaskets were leaking oil as well. Lots of little issues but Subaru owners don't seem to mind lol! Great driving car though
