The TTC is calling for safety improvements to be made aboard transit vehicles after a driver was attacked by a woman swinging a hammer. Three people were hurt after the woman attacked the bus driver on Monday, striking the driver's hands several times. The woman boarded the bus on Grandravine Drive near Driftwood Avenue in North York after 11 a.m. Monday morning and immediately attacked the driver. Passengers then tackled her and held her to the floor until police arrived. Police say the woman accused the bus driver of not stopping for her earlier on the route and then began swinging the hammer at the driver, who is in hospital with bruises. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross says assaults on transit operators have risen over the past few years. "One assault is one too many, as far as we're concerned," Ross says. The attack shows how protective barriers need to be installed on TTC vehicles, he says. All TTC vehicles will be equipped with cameras by next February. Toronto Police Const. Tony Vella says officers are still interviewing witnesses. Chelsea Simon, 23, faces three counts of assault and assault with a weapon.
