Hey all,

I'm doing some research on handguns and I'd like some advice. So far, I've figured out that I'd like a 9mm (cheap ammo), decent carry size, and I don't really want to spend more than $300 or so. I was looking at the CZ-82 with a 9 rnd mag and the S&W sigma series. Any advice for other guns to look at?

Glock 26. You could also get a Glock 29. 10>9.

I have like 6 of these things. They're entirely WAY more fun than they need to be.

I like the S&W M&P Shield 9 i just bought - $399. New and tough to find right now, I understand. It's slender and compact, but with the mag extension offers a full grip. Standard mag still lets me get part of my pinkie on the grip. Very enjoyable to shoot, which is not true with some other compact guns. It's not a pocket gun though.

The S&W Sigma is an awful, awful gun. You'd think for being damn near a copy of a Glock it'd be good, but nope.

I'm just about to pull the trigger (Heh) on a Kel Tec pf9. It seems to be a good compact light gun for the money based on my research.

At least it has a lifetime warranty.

Not a Kel-Tec fan?

Get your budget up by $100 and you can move from bottom of the bin to pretty decent. Very few decent 9mm Luger semis out there for $300 unless you get one used from a friend or something. Take a look for an Argentine Hi-Power if you think it might suit your needs.

PF-9 is a good gun. Not the prettiest, but Kel-Tec has figured the whole gun thing out (finally).

I don't know them well enough to dog them. My dad has one, but I haven't fired it. I hear their decent, but when there's a lifetime warranty, you can put thousands of rounds down the pipe and be confident in the weapon. Can't argue with that.

I shot a Kel-Tec in what I would call a pocket gun - I can't recall the model number - it shot fine and accurate enough, but at 25 rounds, I had enough.

To the OP - what do you want it for? Are you proficient with a semi auto handgun? My M&P was my first, so I shopped for a gun that was fairly enjoyable to shoot, but still concealable. 150+ rounds in one session is fine. I could have bought smaller, but it wouldn't have been enjoyable at the range.

I also realized I and no one else commented on the CA part of your question - I can't help there.

There isn't a whole lot to it. You can't have more than a 10 round mag. That's pretty much it. If you buy a gun out of state, and the mag is larger than that, just track down a smaller one when you get to Cali. Problem solved.

If the goal is to concealed carry, it varies a lot by county as to how difficult it will be to get a permit.

I have no interest in carrying, so I haven't looked too far into the details.

California also has rules about drop safeties and so on. There are some very common pistols that haven't passed the CA drop test (drop it straight on its muzzle with a round chambered and see if it fires). There's an actual list out there of what's legal.

And because California is retarded, the same pistol in 2 different finishes (blued/stainless) counts as 2 models, and has to be tested twice.

Look for yourself.

I'm right there with you. I don't want a subcompact that I hate shooting. I'd much rather have something concealable that I'll be happy with at the range. What good is a gun if I don't practice with it?

Increase your budget by $100, and you can get some decent weapons. At $300, you're kind of stuck in the E36 M3 tier, unless you get some kind of hookup.

That's the impression I've been getting lately. Guns aren't really something I want to cheap out on but I'm trying to be frugal. Oh well, its just money right?

I agree with others bump your budget up a bit especially if you plan on being able to use this for defense. I would rather spend more and know the tool will do the job when called on. My carry is a SIG 220 and my backup is also a SIG 230, alternate carry is a Glock 17. All but my primary can be found used for around $400 or less. I would trust my life to any of these three without hesitation.

A police turn-in SIG would be a great idea!

In reply to Osterkraut:

Last year there was an awesome deal on police turn in SIG 228s. I wish I had been able to snag one then. If I remember correctly they went for about $325-350 each.

Cool thing is you cand then send it into SIG for a tune up and basically get back a fresh gun. Have night sights installed at the same time if it doesn't have them already. Get some Cali legal mags and then if you leave Commiefornia you can get the regular capacity ones that will hold a few more rounds depending on caliber.

EDIT: Some places have surplus German imports on SIG P6s for just under $400 with 2 mags and holster. This is the military version of the P225. Not a bad deal given the current climate in the gun world. As soon as I get a job I will be buying a couple of them, one for me one for the fiance. The problem will be finding one that will ship to Cali.

I couldn't find a Kel Tec anywhere. I ended up with a Ruger p95 based on a friends recommendation. It's a bigger gun, but will be more fun to shoot.

Edit- it's even CA certified.
