"Back in the day" you could buy all sorts of cool F-4 parts. (I may or may not have a Martin Baker MKH7-AF in my basement). I've seen nose cones, slime lights, control slicks, wing tips, canopies, etc. Unfortunately, somewhere around 2000 a certain unfriendly middle eastern government started trying to buy parts from secondary sources like Ebay and various aviation sites to keep their fleet flying and the supply quickly dried up.
That's the air guard in Terre Haute, IN where I live.
I am pretty sure an F4 would not be my choice if I were to buy a plane of that era. F4's might be call "an atrocity of aerodynamics". I think I would go with something more like a Skyhawk (slower, but a lot more fun) or an F8 (last of the gunfighters).
BTW - There actually is a privately owned A4. It was at the Chino show last year (that might be the plane shown above). Might want to disable the variable incidence wing on the F8 though. It's just a bit weird and probably not necessary when you are not dropping the plane onto carriers.
Fun fact: the F-8 can, and has, flown with the wings folded.
