That was the inspiration for this:

Bertone styled both, so was it the inspiration or just a "styling exercise" that evolved into the x19

Bertone designed the Autobianchi A112 Runabout as a styling exercise. The Fiat brass liked it so much they asked Bertone to develop a production model which became the Fiat X 1/9. Much like Jensen and the Austin Healeys, Bertone built the bodies, Fiat supplied the drivetrains and assembled them then sold them through their dealer network from 1972-1981.

When Fiat finally decided to end production and pull out of the US market in 1982 Bertone bought powertrains from them and continued to build the cars in their plant. That's why the last years (82-89) are known as Bertone X 1/9's. They were imported to the States by Malcolm Bricklin, yes the same guy who brought Subaru and Yugo here along with the Bricklin SV1.

I was going to say that I liked the body, but possibly not the lights, off the show car much better than the production model . . . . . . . . . and then I found this picture of the back end.

Tell me that's not the gas tank, please!

But there are views I could really dig.

That's got a real Stratos vibe to the wheel openings. Thanks for sharing that car, I'd never seen it.

You'd almost think the Stratos was the hardtop version of the show car, with real lights of course.

Just not this version of the Stratos.

I like that windshield. I wonder how I could replicate it?

I wonder how you get in that car & how that door works?

I'm completely unable to find the other X1/9 prototype. The buggy looking thing. I've only ever seen it in vintage FAZA catalogs.

X1/9's are very near the top of the current DD replacement list.

I've been working with a local guy, sorting out the suspension on this one (K20 swap):

The suspension/steering has some very hatchet-murderer tendencies. Without a thorough re-design, you need to lock down that suspension so that it doesn't move at all just so it won't do anything evil. And yet, it's a fun kind of evil.

80s sleeper. LTD LX with a 5.0HO. At least that's what the CL ad says. Is it really worth $3770? http://northernwi.craigslist.org/cto/4010425891.html

Me too, I took the photo waiting at the light at Cox and 42. (IHop on Cox never gets old either.)
