The way they'd work a weekend drill was to keep the best airplane at base, and send all the rest out. These airplanes would generally all land wherever they might end up after an engine failure, and then they'd send the good airplane around to pick the crews up and get them back to base.
Then the full time guys would spend the time between the end of that weekend drill and the next one fixing, collecting and getting the other airplanes back to base for the next weekend drill.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
