I agree with RossD but got it from a different direction
$97 shirt + the $1 you kept is $98.
You got $50 from your mom -$1=$49 You got $50 from your dad -$1=$49
So you borrowed $49 +$49 =$98
$98= $98 so all is correct.
Math isn't hard, your post just plays on people assuming what is read in the problem statement is true.
