I have some upcoming non-car travel and wanted a new "walking around" camera--something better than my iPhone and less bulky than a DSLR. Plus, my old Canon point-and-shoot hasn't been the same since Pikes Peak 2012.
JG had me sold on a Sony point-and-shoot, but then I saw the new Canon G15. I admit a bias as I have been shooting Canon since like 1982, but the big selling feature was the f1.8-2.8 lens. I mainly need a fast lens, compact body, and some ability to control stuff. I don't need a giant zoom lens. Details: http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/compacts/canon_g15
I got the camera last week and finally got a chance to take a few images this weekend. Wow. I gotta post some photos, but so far I'm in love.
Hey, there's that photography thread going. Perfect place to post them rather than the hotlink thread.
I need to upload them, first. Well, first I need to figure out how to upload to Flickr from my iPad. I'm guessing it's easy, but I'll do that tomorrow with fresh eyes.
I love my G12 (preceding model - there was no G13 or G14). Controls are really well thought out; not having to go into the menus for normal shooting, even in full manual mode, is great. Image quality is quite good, and shooting in RAW allows a lot of flexibility in post-processing. Faster lens on the G15 would be a nice plus, though I would miss the fold-out display.

Will be keeping an eye on that one. I sold my DSLR because I didnt want to spend 214301 in lenses but I need something more powerful than my current P&S.
I think it's an interesting choice, but I'll sick with my DSLR. It's more my type.
I really like the size and performance of my Nikon J1. I chose it because I am a Nikon guy and Costco had a deal on it that beat anything from Sony or Canon. But look at the mirrorless format, lots of great options out there and more coming all the time. Even Nikon has released a few more.
Yeah I'm a mirrorless guy as well. My digital is a Panasonic GF1, with a 20mm pancake lens. It works remarkably well, and it goes everywhere with me.
If I were buying a new camera right now, it would be the Olympus OM-D. I'm having a tough time not plunking down the dough right now.

Cool camera. For this trip, though, I want something I can carry in a coat pocket.

That's the key for me. Most of the time I can't be bothered to carry my DSLR or something else with a protruding lens. I have a Rollei 35 for the same reason: fits in a pocket, meaning it gets carried a lot rather than left at home.

good choice, i carry a G11 in the field for work, and the fiance and I have a G15 on the wedding registry.

Depends on the coat pocket I guess - the OM-D is actually only 1/2 inch longer and taller than the G15. They're the same depth. Add 15mm body cap lens for ultimate portability.

The Canon is about $500 cheaper however, and it really does take great photos, so you certainly made a good choice.

My old carry-about was an Olympus XA. Loved that camera until 35mm got so expensive to process. The Rollei 35 is a great camera though.

I like the XA, particularly the protective clamshell, though I prefer the fully manual controls on the Rollei. The XA is a really great stealth camera for street photography from what I've read.
FWIW, I've got a pro lab here that does 36-exp C-41 for under $4/roll (process only, cut & sleeve - I scan all my negatives), which I really don't find too bad on the relatively limited number of rolls that I shoot. Not as many options these days, though I hear tell that Rite-Aid's send-out service is done by Fuji labs and is cheap. Wal-mart's is too, but you don't get your 35mm C-41 negatives back, just prints (you get negs back for every other format, though).

What's the old saying: The best camera is the one that you have with you?
I'm using my iPhone's camera way more than I expected. In a year I have taken nearly 4000 shots with it. For this trip, I want something that's way better in lower light.
Although I'm half tempted to bring an old rangefinder, too. We'll see.
