Watch Cars. Notice the "spark plugs" flashing on top of Flo's dinner? It's the firing order of a flathead V-8.
Cars is a really good movie. It's not the best of the Pixar lot (I give that credit to Wall-E), but it's a really fun movie that has a ton of references for the gear heads in the crowd.
Pixar is always good for paying attention to minor details, that even just a small member of the viewership will notice. Inside jokes, minor references, stuff in the background of a shot in a shop....and even the big stuff. "Mater" is based on an old tow truck they came across on a research trip down route 66 .
They also have threads that run through all movies. The Pizza Planet truck from Toys is in the junk pile in Wall-e for instance, and LOTS more. I love that John Ratzenberger is their good luck charm and must be in every Pixar movie.

Hooniverse said: And if the trailer is any indication, man-children like us shall be treated to an action-packed tale of dangerous AMC machines gone rogue, where Rebel Machines collude with evil mastermind Oleg Cassini in a deadly Alliance that stretches from Kenosha to Barcelona to the tree-lined boulevards of Boulogne-Billancourt, setting the stage for a final showdown between McQueen and an army of Ramblers who will cut like a Javelin. No Ambassador can save you now. This time, there will be no Encores.
I rarely go to movies and even less often, buy a DVD but Cars II will sit in my den with my copy of Cars I. I notice something different every time I watch it.

Amen. When the first movie came out, my oldest son was 3 years old. I spent literally hundreds of dollars on toys, clothes, etc...from the movie. Now when Cars II comes out, his younger brother will just be turning 4 years old. Do'h!!!
Cars is my favorite Pixar movie. Wall-E and Finding Nemo were awesome, but Cars is the best. I credit attention to tiny details, just as everyone else said. The Porsche sounds like a Porsche, the stock car sounds like a stock car, and of course little "tifosi" Fiat 500s talking with Italian accents wearing red, green, and white wigs. And the stock car learns to do a Scandinavian flick to race around the dirt oval. When he does, the dirt in the air curls around the car in the exact same way it would a rally car on dirt...it's obvious these guys watched footage of cars going sideways on dirt A LOT to get that right.
I just hope Cars II doesn't ruin it. I always get nervous with sequels to great movies.

I have the matchbox-sized Doc and Lizzie cars on my desk at work

I prefer to expect it to be horrible. Then, if by accident the sequel actually is good, it's a pleasant surprise.
Like you, I thoroughly enjoyed Cars. Very good morals to boot. Do the job right the first time, be respectful, don't lie, etc.
I can't wait. My oldest was 3 and I too spent alot of money on the diecasts ( i have King, Mario and the Rusteez brothers on my desk). My middle son will be 3 when this one comes out, oh mamma.
Cars is a toy marketing juggernaut. My nephews have, like, four different versions of Lightning McQueen.

With a second movie, the Cars franchise will be Pixars biggest merchandising success, if it isn't already.
If Pixar sequels are any indication (Toy Story 1-3) Cars 2 will be epic.
Oh, And I have Luigi and "bling" Lightning on my desk.
The funny thing with Cars is that as much of a marketing machine as it is, and as popular a movie as it was, there is so little of it at Disney World. They have lots of Toy Story stuff, a huge Nemo ride and other Pixar things. But the only Cars themed thing they have is one small corner of Hollywood Studio theme park where replicas of Lightning and Mater sit. We were pretty disappointed when we went there in the summer.
In California, they're building an entire 12 acre park - "Cars land" - based on Radiator Springs http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/disneyscaliforniaadventure/index?name=DCAPreview&bhcp=1#p=PicturesCarsLand
I had the chance to visit Pixar when Cars was under production. One of our customers does IT work there, and the Locost pulled a bunch of people into the parking lot. The place is full of car nuts.
When Mia and Tia popped their headlights at McQueen and his number was written on them - that just about killed me in the original. I'm not sure my 3-year-old nephew picked up on that.
