don't forget on a higher priced vehicle though, you're paying sales tax up front too. Depending where you live, here in MI, 6% on a $40,000 car is $2,400 all by itself. So even if you "won" and only lost say $3K on it, you gotta tack on the tax loss and you're right back at $5-$6K.
as compared to your original concept of buying a $7K car... and hoping for near that, it'd be equal to buying the $7K car and selling it for $1,500.

Or get a Chevy SS. Sure, it'll cost a bit more but you can probably get $10000 off and 0% financing from GM. I think it'll be recognized as one of the Car Guy Specials once it's no longer available, like the G8.
Just make sure you spec the manual trans.
G8 GT's are cheap. G8 GXP's with a manual are $$.
Sorry, I just assumed that you'd get the stick as a car guy :)
I haven't actually called dealers, but looking on autotrader I haven't found any of them with rates low enough for me. Yet. What did these start at? Seems like you can get into them at $40k. $40k financed though is more than I'd care to take on if the value drops--unlikely, but possible. I may call dealerships and see what they can actually do, but that still seems a little too practical of a vehicle while I don't have kids.
We had one here, $46K but it had all two options that you could add on to a '14. It sat on the lot untouched for 2 years, no one would look at it even because no one knew what it was, not even the salesmen. It went out the door for $10K off just to unload it.
Yeah, they're a sales disaster. Deep discounts.
That's because they were a marketing disaster. GM never advertised them. And then they stuck them with the world's dumbest name. Our salesmen were always telling customers it was an Impala SS or a Malibu SS or even Camaro SS sedan, because no one knew what it was.

$2500 could buy you a nice DB Integra that you can drive for 3 years and sell for $1500.

The NC Miata is still depreciating, they've got a way to go before they bottom out.
I would look at luxury cars. MB, Lincolns, Caddys, Big BMWs.. they lose their value SO fast in the first couple of years you can pick up a 5 year old one for funny money and get rid if it in a few years for not much less and before the real problems set in
Well its not sporting, but I've read many different articles that these hold the most value over anything out there now.

I actually thought about those. They'd be a really cool car for sure. I've got an eye out for them

Wierd, cuz they ugly. It's like a Jeep without the cool parts of being a Jeep and is ugly.
Diesel trucks hold value ridiculously because they people who buy used ones are farm kids who save their pennies and can afford a 10 year old truck that is still $20,000.
Tacoma's hold their value.
EVO, STI, R32 seem to hold value.
Anything Japanese and RWD.
Diesel trucks hold their value because you can make money with them.

Well, for now I think I've got the vehicle narrowed to an NA/NB Miata, MR2, older 4Runner, early Lexus RX, Pathfinder/Qx4, or GMT400 2 door. I decided I just don't want more debt regardless of if it will hold the value.
And for inquiring minds since these seem like extremely different vehicles, we kind of have 2 vehicular needs right now: Something for the dogs, and something for me. Depending on what I find, we may or may not be selling the wife's TSX.
I've been shopping and bought a Gen2 Prius. The price on them seems steady, but...
I am noticing that Gen1 Prius are really cheap. I know the Gen2 is a much more comfortable car but Mechanically the Gen1s seem very stout. The biggest downfall of the Gen1 seems to be that it is not as good a hyw car as the Gen2. The Gen1 seems more intended to be a urban car.
But, you might be looking for an urban car? If so, easy to park in the city and way at the bottom of the depreciation curve! Highly overshadowed by the Gen2.

Not quite--looking for a dog hauler, or a sports car. Gen2 could possibly work as the dog hauler, but my wife can't stop laughing when she sees them after a coworkers kid called it the "Bloated Mosquito"

Jeep, your price range should be in 4.0 TJ territory, but they rust. A clean southern example with adequate care might be in decent shape when you go to sell.
I drove a 2016 WRX for one year. I paid $26500 out the door, put 12,000 miles on it. Sold it for $26000.....

I don't understand how that happens. Why would someone do that? Do people have such good creditors that they can beat manufacturer financing?

We bought a 2007 Odyssey for $32K out the door when 30K mile 2-3 year old used models were trading for more than that on Craigslist.

In reply to Keith Tanner:
My two are on the early end - I had an '07 and have an '06.
My logic is - buy one that's older and a bit higher miles; it'll still take you to 200K easily.
So I guess I mean NC (06-08) cars for the most part.
I have the perfect car for you. Silver w/tan top '00 Miata LS with 114,000 miles and completely rust free. Even the exhaust bolts are not rusted. I won't be selling it until the spring, maybe a month or two.
