Hey Guys,

I just had a student ask me where in Central Florida they can buy locally grown and/or harvested (i.e. hunted) meat. They want to do a high meat (i.e. paleo) diet, and want to get some food for it.

I know some of you guys do organic cow shares, and many others hunt. Who should he contact in the 863 (polk) area.

Sorry, I don't know that area, but if you are looking, look at farmers markets, CSAs, buyers groups and local-food restaurants. All of those can point you to the ranchers/butchers in any area.

Community Supported Agriculture.

Essentially you're buying shares of a farm. They bring you whatever proportion of stuff they get, and usually they have some tie in with meat producers if they themselves don't have it so you can essentially be grocery-store free if you want to be. Those folks often have lots of names for local producers and would be a great place to start. That's how we found our cow-guy.

Community Supported Agriculture. You pay a lump sum before the seed go in the ground and then every week you get a share of what the farmers pull out of the ground. $550 keeps us in excellent local produce for 5 or 6 months. Dunno if it winds up cheaper overall, but at the very least it forces you to learn to love kale.

A lot of these places also do livestock, and if not can certainly point you to someone who does.

Read that thread - the hangar steak is awesome and now I have to go eat mine.

Go to a farmers market. Buy local meat.

Hard huh?

What kind of local meat does Florida have?

You can also try a local butcher. That's where all of our meat comes from. Raised here, butchered here, eaten here. Better quality, better cuts, not to mention they don't try to hide things with the Styrofoam tray. The wife bought a months supply today. We haven't bought meat from a grocery store in a couple of years.

^^^ Hog, lots of hogs. (...and deer that are not much larger than a jack rabbit.) Oh, plenty of monitor lizards and iguanas, too.

UF raises and slaughters it's own meat. Their sausage is excellent, too. I suppose that it is a bit far from Polk county, though.

when I was in TX, I had a high-dollar deer processor who had several clients who refused their meat because of higher-than-expected prices. Tell your friend to hook up with some game processors. They almost always have surplus meat at the end of the season.
