So the last customer car goes away Monday. This marks the end of 15 years of building hot rods, etc for other people. In the last few years I have found that the money i get, and the satisfaction i get, just isn't worth the time i invest.

This is tough. Just feels wrong and right at the same time. I've got plenty to keep me busy with my own stuff, a family to focus on, and homeowner stuff that I've been putting off. So it's not like I'mggoing to be bored.

Just kind of a weird feeling shutting down shop after all these years and struggling.

Its a tough thing, making a radical move like that. Even moreso when its something you poured your heart into. Losing passion for ones own pet project is probably the most painful thing I've ever done. Just know that on the other end, there is unexpected beauty in the simplicity of your new life, and it could very easily rekindle your passion, or bring a new one to light you never really thought of. You got this.

Was this a full time job or a side gig?

My old boss did the same thing. His shop had been open for 40 years. He had to give it up because his wife left him and he couldn't make ends meet, so he closed up shop and got a job that could help with the bills.

20-30 hours a week on top of my day job.

I had all intention of going full time independant, but never felt comfortable. Now im glad I didn't.

thats the sad thing about turning a hobby into a job, now its a job, not a hobby.

And that's why I've always kept the two separate, except for my foray into Brit car repair some years back. Even that wound up with me getting a bit disgusted; being on someone else's schedule and budget in my off hours wasn't a lot of fun after a while so I wound it down.
