I would recommend that anyone move to the Research Triangle Park. Fantastic area, I've lived here all my life and I have no plans on going anywhere else. Chapel Hill is a college town for sure, very liberal, and it always stays young and hip. We have an incredible local music scene, if you're into that.
Chapel Hill rent is a little higher than say, just outside of Chapel Hill and into Durham or Chatham county, like Carrboro. Basically CH a pretty small city but it sits on the boarder of Orange, Chatham, and Durham counties.
Schools: I don't know too much about Orange County-Chapel Hill schools, I went to school in Wake County but all the schools in the area are pretty nice systems.
Job market: anything medicine, computer, technology, etc is huge here. We have GlaxoSmithKline, The World Trade Center, SAS, IBM, John Deere, and a lot of other stuff within 20 miles.
Construction: CH is pretty well developed, Cary and Morrisville (~15 minutes away) are currently growing hugely and they will both soon be knocking on CH's door.
Automotive: We have a pretty decent club around here, Tar Heel Sports Car Club, with autocross, rallycross, the occasional TSD rally and track day. 40 miles/1.5 hours from VIR. You'll be 3 hours from the ocean, and 3 hours from the mountains. Our mountain roads are often noted as some of the best driving in the country, i.e. tail of the dragon, etc.
The weather is awesome, it can get pretty humid in the summer but other than that, I think it's perfect. BTW it was 70* here today.
x3... and although we have more than our share of highway left-lane loungers, we have easy access to some of the best bbq in the country.

You got better seafood, and no traffic. Sounds like a good trade to me.

I just meant NC in general. I live in Atlanta now, but I grew up in Hyde (my dad managed the Nat'l Wildlife Refuges over there). The job's too good to leave, and I've become quite fond of this city after living here for 20yr or so..but sometimes I just wanna come home.
If you ever have the time to waste, next time you go to the Banks take US-264 instead of 64. It's a bit longer, but it's a nice side trip. Can't vouch for the quality of the pavement these days..the last time I was home, I was interviewing for a job at the aquarium in Manteo. I flew into Hampton Roads and drove down from VA.
264 rejoins 64 just before Manns Harbor, after that it's the same old trip.
well its official june 30th im out of a job.. me and my wife will be heading to nc sometime after our son is out of school to check things out....
You might as well pack the moving van and bring your stuff with you . It's very hard to come for a visit then go back up north, I hear.
You'll need to log in to post.
