I have a family trip planned for next summer from Charleston, SC to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The plan is to spend an easy 3 days driving up and 3 days back and do some sightseeing on the way. We'll be staying for a week with my parents, on their boat on Lake Superior. I'm trying to work out an itinerary for the up and back trip.
The only stop I have so far is the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn MI. Any other must see stops between the two?
Another possibility is the Great Lakes Shipwrecks Museum.
For the record, we are more museum, nature, state park oriented than tourist trap oriented.

The Henry Ford is worth three days by itself.

I figured that would be the case. We might hit it on the way up and on the way back. That will depend on how long I can convince my wife to look at cars and such.

It's much more than cars. They had to drag the wife and I out of the Greenfield village part at closing time. It's one of the few places we want to go back to.
Do a day at the Henry Ford and a day at Greenfield Village. Air museums in Dayton and Kalamazoo are both good. I happen to really like the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners. It's a nice place to spend an entire day.
Some of my favorite places in the word are the West Coast of Michigan, North of Traverse City and South of Mackinac.
Within miles of The Most Southern Point of the Great Lakes and just a couple miles from my house is Cedar Point The Roller Coaster Capital of the World. Very much the tourist trap type place but top notch if you want roller coasters.
Kalamazoo is a little far west of the rout, but Dayton is actually on the alternate rout so that might be doable. I would rather take two different routs.
Maybe we'll do a 13 hour burn up to Dearborn and spend two days at the Ford Museum and Village on the way up.
No suggestions other than try to eat bbq in each different state. Just to see regional differences in style. Thats my favorite thing to do when travelling.

If you happen to make a habit of carrying firearms, then take a read:

You aren't far from Buddy's Pizza when you're at the Ford. (10-15 minutes) Highly recommended.
Know nothing about the area so nothing to add other than: enjoy yourselves! Tell your mom and dad I said hi.
The Sloan Museum, in Flint, is a good museum and it is not an all day event. Lots of good eats around Flint too. Get in touch if you want a recommendation.
