Those are the types of cars that we seem to like, and Josh thinks we need a list. That seems reasonable, since making lists of desirable cars seems to be a fashionable pastime of late. Let's make one. Here are my nominations for the list:
1) Yugo (you know this has to be on the list. Too many GRMers love this car for it to be omitted.)
2) BMW Isetta
3) Honda N600
4) Wartburg
The last three were chosen because they were recent challenge entries that I was fond of.
Add some other cars to the list...

Maybe this is regional, but they're FAR from obscure.

Should I have added running?

I'll second regional. They are far from common down here. I'd bet most of this list would be in the "unobtainium" level of obscure here. If it's not a truck, no one wants it.

I want one of those BAD. You know that thing in the front that sort of looks like a grille? That's a drawer that slides out to access the battery.
I really love my current selection of vehicles, but sometimes I think I desperately need a weirdness injection.
In reply to Josh:
Ransom and I were actually building a GSXR powered Vespa 400 challenge car
Until Fate and weather intervened and dropped a huge amount of snow and then my car port on top of it.
We will find another suitable microcar shell and start again.

Oh, man, was that the same incident that killed your Fiat 850? That was one of my favorite cars on this forum.
Same incident
But it ain't dead. Just a bit buggered on the roof.
I drive it at least 3 days a week. It will be torn down for the roof repair and some transmission swappage soon.
I vote rear engine fiats. I like em a lot!

I love this. The picture name says that it started life as a fiat 126B. Was the Volga a badged-engineered version?

Lada!
My neighbor is selling his Lada VFTS for $5000 euro:
Dog Box 5spd, twin weber side drafts, full cage, sport cam, bored and stroked, bilstein shocks, not exactly "challenge" material, but it'll put some lead in your tank

How about a volga (turbo cayenne powered)?
I much prefer this one, built on a BMW 850 drivetrain (although it kind of stretches the definition of Volga).
Cheap, old, and obscure? For a minute, I was afraid this thread was about ME!
My collection includes,
Alfa GTV6.
Capri GT V6.
Triumph Stag 3.5 V8.
All are relatively rare and were picked up cheap
Skoda 135 Rapid. Had one of these, in white with cheesy side graphics, for a few months in the late 80s -- they were sold in Canada for a while. Never made it on the road due to me not being able to find spares in that pre-Internets era.
