Free Hot Rod cheapie watch given to Tunakid #3 broke, basically he ripped the band off.

How be to fix? Is there a real thing I can do to attach the band properly, or do I just shove a finish nail in there and cut off the end?

If the band is held in with pins, check your local harbor freight. They have a cheap set of pins, and specialty tools, but I always used a finger nail.

Like this one not sure what to search on the site, but I've seen just the case of pins for sale at my local store.

Amazon has a good selection of these.  Called a spring bar, just measure the width between the watch's ears, ~$6.  Next time you're in a mall ask at a kiosk or jewelry store.

You'll want to measure between the lugs to determine the correct size. 18mm to 24mm with a .8mm end is pretty typical.

The ones 914Driver linked are nice because they're double ridged making them easy to remove and install.

Cheap NATO or other band and you're good to go provided the lug holes weren't damaged. The tool is probably the most expensive part if you get the correct one but a jewelers screwdriver works as long as you're careful with the lugs.

Did the band break off of the watch, or did the actual band break? If the former, the other folks in he thread nailed it. If the latter, you can usually fix a metal band with the appropriate sized roll pin. Hardware stores should have a decent selection, and the internet has more.

Or you can get a really cheap NATO type band. I like them. Smart design keeps the watch on your wrist even if one spring bar breaks.
