They are rated at 33 highway, and Fuelly average is ~31mpg... http://www.fuelly.com/car/hyundai/accent I keep track of every fill up. I've logged 28039 miles (+ whatever my current tank has gone) and paid 3,312.84 in fuel. My average cost per mile is $0.118 in fuel alone, in a car that has averaged 30.4mpg. If you add in my estimated maintenance/upgrade costs, initial purchase price, and subtract the current value of the car, it comes out to around $0.17/mile. Add what I've paid in insurance and in personal property taxes, and that number is probably around $0.28 :(

2000 1.5L SOHC manual car. Wife drives it daily (she has the 75+mile round trip). She short shifts, keeps to within 5-over the speed limit and is good. I randomly check her mileage and it's ALWAYS 38+. The last year or so it's been closer to a 40mpg average as she's getting more and more tanks over that 40 mark.

Car currently has 230+k miles on it, the engine has ~180k. Sad part is we don't know how many ACTUAL miles we have on it. We only noticed it randomly not turning over the thousands place marker 2 years ago. JUST her driving back and forth is a minimum of 18000 miles per year (for the last 5 years), not taking into account the 120 miles per day for 4 days a week she did for Grad school (the reason we bought it) or any weekend trips or her taking it to Evansville/Kokomo randomly to see freinds over the summer time.

Currently getting 35 (US) MPG in the Swift GT shifting at 8500, and just generally driving like a retard.

I never got that good in mine, but I also had cams and a very poor tune in it. I want another one :(

He's just mad because he couldn't build a fast GT.

I might have cams. I know the guy that makes them. Been getting under 7 l/100 km since I pulled it out this year.

Timing belt and plugs every 60k, inner tie rods and inside front passenger cv joint boot every 120k or so, pile of oil seals every decade. Keep the rust off it, and it's the proverbial cockroach. I WAY overpaid for my beater out of desperation, and I'm still only into it for $.18/mi over a year, including initial purchase, maintenance, gas, oil, etc. 50 miles a day without complaint, 23mpg(bad knock sensor, should be more like 27), starts every time, and can fit a full size fridge in the boot.
Care to share some numbers? 23mpg @ 3.50/gal is >$0.15/mile Your purchase and all maintenance is less than $0.03/mile? That's pretty good, especially for a car that maintenance intensive. I've owned one car under $0.10/mile, but it involved collecting some insurance money from being rear ended *then* selling it (unrepaired) for more than I paid for it.

Guess my math sucks, make that $.20/mi. Into the car for around $900(it's a filthy leaky rusty dented pig) including two good synthetic oil changes, four free wheels and tires pulled off my last daily(add $100 for challenge budget), a pair of rear brake lines, and 23mpg at $3.40/gal over 18k miles in 15 months. Due for tie rods, front axles, oil change, and a few exhaust gaskets this summer if it's gonna stick around, should up the tally a bit.

He's probably using the insurance #s with his car as a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) vehicle. Not a fair comparison really. I've had a 3rd car on liability only cost me <$5 a month before. But the real cost of ownership should be compared as though its your only vehicle.

I do lie. . . . . and I could never get my SSGT to get over 33. But then again, I too had a E36 M3ty tune and hooned it.... hardcore. That and 70mph @ 4200rpms was a bit excessive.

We're paying ~ $76/month for 3 cars (one with full coverage) and the motorcycle. I love the wife getting teacher discounts.

Well... i have 4 cars insured.

The bulk of the cost comes from the MSM and the Cherokee.

If this were my only vehicle, it'd be $36/month. My insurance company IS aware that this is my year round daily driver, though.

Total cost for 2 drivers for the MSM, Cherokee, MX6, and Escort (Why the hell i still have insurance on the Escort, i have no idea), $250 deductible on the MSM and Cherokee full coverage, collision on MX6 and Escort is around $130/month.
