Do you know if she gave up the German citizenship when she became a US citizen? That might be the easier way to start looking at this. Depending on when she moved to the US, there might also be a couple of other, not quite that simple options.

That said, it used to be a lot harder to retain your German citizenship when accepting another citizenship. Germany really doesn't like dual citizenship and they've only relaxed the requirements in the past ten years or so.
