Well if someone was snapping pictures of me washing my bike that I didn't have listed for sale..yeah I'd be a bit concerned.

That's what we are getting at. He's not selling his bike.

Same thing happened to me last year with my, very distinctive, Miata. A buddy called me one Sunday evening to let me know my car was listed for sale on CL. I checked the add and sure enough there was my car, with a picture taken that day at autocross. I called the guy, assuming he was trying to pre-sell my car - then steal it from me to collect the cash. I was agitated on the phone, laid it all out to him, embellished just a tad telling him that I had a brother-in-law on the local PD and that they had been notified and had all of his contact info.

As it turns out he thought the picture of mine in the listing would generate more interest than his pos Miata he was trying to sell.

In my case all ended well. I wish you the same luck.

So you know something I don't? He never mentioned whether he was or wasn't in the post.

Reason I concluded he was selling it was that you'd have to have a telephoto and live in a densely developed area in order for someone to snap a worthwhile picture of your just washed bike. Unless the guy walked up while the owner was inside.

Second, the OP said he was "looking at prices"...so why else do you look at prices if your thinking of selling a bike. Maybe the picture-taker offered a price that seemed low, and the OP was checking to see if it was a worthwhile offer or not.

Number one way bikes get stolen in suburbia: wash it and leave it out front to drip dry. Crime of opportunity.

And yeah if some mullet took a pic of my bike and listed it for sale there would be a serious reckoning. At the very least, I'd get the CL ad number, then email/call etc and tell the dude 'if my E36 M3 gets ganked I am immediately contacting the PD with this info. Take the ad out NOW.'

I have another "maybe he is just...":

Maybe, he is just taking pictures of the bike as well as other bikes because he is making a calendar.

I mean...I know criminals can be very stupid...but posting a Craigslist Ad Prior to grand theft auto is blatantly self-incriminating.

If your worried about it, just contact the dude and be like "yo bro I sees you gots this moto...when can I get that from you? I got a half-k I gotta unload if you wanna trade."

If its a GSXR with an extended swingarm, the guy probably does talk like that.

My brother had a car cover stolen off his P71 recently. On his drive home from work he found it on another car 1.5 blocks away on the same street. Criminals can be really dumb. A phone call to the local PD ended with the car being towed because it had another car's plates on it. Unfortunately the car cover (with my brothers plate number painted on it!) was torn to shreds and useless by the time he got it back.

I stole this car so I put stolen plates on it.

Then I stole this car cover to hide the stolen plates.

Then I came home and someone stole my car!

This world is crazy!

I agree, someone sorta did that with something I sold once, I had gotten it really cheap and they complained about the price until i took a few dollars off, then relisted it for more than double the price before then even got it from me. I wasnt very impressed. They ended up selling it on ebay and making about $10 on it when I made about $40 selling it to them to it turned out well in the end though lol.

You guys are way too trusting.

I don't even work with my garage door open. It has deadbolts on the man door, padlocks in the rollup tracks, the opener release is wired in place, bars on the windows and blackout curtains. Even all that is only going to slow someone down.

The only people who know what the inside of my shop looks like are my family and four of my friends.

I'm also the shiny happy person who doesn't lend out his tools but guess what? I still have all my tools.

Think about it, the guy now knows where you live and what you have.

You aren't home all the time and you don't know his schedule.

Sorry, I don't trust anyone. I know too many folks who've had their garage and house robbed. Usually I ask them if they were working with the garage door open and if anyone stopped in to talk about cars. Guess what?

The legal system doesn't punish thieves so there is no incentive to NOT steal your stuff unless you camp out with a shotgun.

Put your bike inside, lock your bike, lock it to something, then lock up your shop and turn the alarm on.

Saved the listing, for what it's worth. No phone number listed, of course. Just the contact through craigslist.

Craigslist pulled the listing and he hasn't put it back up.

Well familiar with the lack of interest by the police.

And yes, my bike actually is for sale. Not that this has any bearing on the subject.

Worse thing is that I commented about this to my wife. That was a mistake. Now she wants alarms and security lights and new outbuildings, etc.

Why? Because I know how much something is worth and you don't? Because I have more patience, more connections, or more ability to broadcast to a wider audience of possible buyers?

There are many markets that revolve around selling something before you actually own it. Hell, consignment shops do this all the time. I don't see used items sold on Craigslist as any different.

The most common case of this is when you've got a friend or neighbor who HATES the internet. I've had quite a few friends say to me "I don't want to sell on Craigslist because I've heard you can get robbed that way." Ok, how much do you want for it? "$500" I then go home and list at $1000 and see who bites. I don't actually own the item yet, but I'm selling it for a friend who is lazy or timid at a fee that's outrageously high.

Did this once and actually gave a guy an extra hundred bucks over his asking price because I knew I was going to make a decent amount on the item.

It's up to you, the seller, to do your research. Foxtrapper has done his research and found that his price is a bit low.

I still would have played the "reseller" and acted like another potential buyer will to give him an outrageous amount of cash...and then sell it to the reseller for a nice mark-up.

Used car salesmen are sleazy. New car salesmen are sleazy. Anyone trying to make a dollar is sleazy for something they do in their job. Its all in the way you look at it. Don't like it? Get over it.

Thanks for the support fellas.

I'll share another story. A friend wanted to sell a car. I knew the car well, and offered to buy it for a pretty low price. He was completely cool with the deal. I even told him I'd probably resell it. He was fine with that, he just wanted money.

After thinking about it, I decided I just didn't want the hassle of the resell.

I told him how much he could probably get, and even forwarded some contact information of a potential buyer to him. He sold the car for twice what I had offered. Why? Because I was a nice guy and did all the work for him.
