so my daughter comes home for the horror daze, and announces she is quitting her Graduate Assistant position, which means they are paying for her to get her masters and paying her to teach freshmen students, to move to Japan and teach english............i have not been able to eat in 3 days......great except you have no money and the process will take 4 to 5 months for visa's and passports and other crap, i have researched the Japanese company and it is a legitimate deal, they will basically set her up in Japan with a apartment (closet), transportation and a assistant to help her settle, it is a private school listed on the NASDAC with over 100,000 students, she will make more money over there and the 11% tax sounds good and i dont mind her doing it if it makes her happy, which is the bottom line....she has never been happy, now she is not going to be happy on the other side of the world, or maybe she will be treated like the queen of sheba and will be happy........any insights or at least funny comments..........there i feel better, the world as i know it is aware of the situation....

Do you think she would be willing to overnight JDM parts for GRMers?

I have plenty of friends who have gone to Asia to teach English as a second language. Most of them went to Korea. They have ended up staying for years, and have massively enjoyed themselves. I would say that if your daughter is an adventurous type, and good with kids, she will probably be just peachy. That said, other English speakers may be hard to come by depending on where in Japan she ends up, especially in the more rural areas.

I used to work with a woman who did that, her only complaints were about facets of Japanese culture she found frustrating...nothing about difficulty living there.

Ohh, Japan would suck. Not from a country standpoint, but from a distance standpoint. I like family close. 3-4 hours travel max. I feel for you man.

My only daughter is graduating college next year. I'm dreading where she will end up settling.

I'd go back to Japan, no problem. Only if it were mainland Japan though.

My daughter taught in Japan in 2012. She was in the Osaka area for 13 months. It was a great experience for her as it offered her a lot of opportunities for travel in that part of the world (Tokyo, South Korea, Macau, Australia, New Zealand).
She's considering returning to South Korea for another teaching assignment. When she was away we always took the time to video chat once a week.

DD#1 is poised to do the Korea thing this summer, but she is at least graduating first. I won't be too happy, but my wife is going to be a wreck.

My aunt lived in Tokyo for a number of years, working for the US govt somehow. Not really sure- she's probably a spy. She loved it, though.

BTW, I need some Skyline parts.

I know a lady that taught in Korea, then in Turkey. While in Turkey, she witnessed a suicide bombing, and got deported.

My sister moved to Belgium a couple of months ago and my parents still haven't quite gotten used to it. Your daughter will almost certainly be fine and will probably come out of the ordeal a better person than she went in. You can Skype for free every day and email 1000 times a day. She won't be any more gone than she would be half way across the country.

I had two chances to go to Japan and didn't take either due to family issues. At that time in my life my parents were going through their separation/divorce and the stress was palpable

If I'm honest, I considered doing this same thing as a Plan B if engineering school hadn't worked out. Be proud that she's willing to try it out.

Crazy. My impressions were that events like these are very very rare. Clean safe and wonderful people. I spent some time on business travel and wanted more time there. They are a bit odd though, soap houses and all

I had an opportunity, as an engineering student, to go to Sweden and work for volvo. I turned it down like a moron, because I had just met my wife and was getting ass on a regular basis. In Sweden I wouldn't get ass, atleast that was the horrible logic of the moment. Anyway, I regret not going, but did marry that girlfriend and two kids later we are ok. Later I lobbied work to send me to another country. It never happened.

My [mom's] cousin does it. He did it because he fell in love with a Japanese woman. I think that he still does love her, and dearly loves his 2 kids, but I suspect that he will move back home once the kids are out of "high school"; with or without her. It is just too far away.

One thing to note: He is not a particularly huge guy (Maybe 6'1" 200?), but when he comes home to the US he comes with the clothes on his back and 2 or 3 empty suitcases. Finding clothes that fit is a challenge. I don't know if that is still true anymore in the days of the internet, but at one point it definintely was an issue for him.

I lived in Japan and taught English for summer. If she is excited about it, support it. She will appreciate was is good and not as good about the states. I think it should be mandatory for every American to live outside the US for at least 6 months.
