We're in Tampa and my 13 year old wants to go. Plan to drive over in the morning, watch and return. Looking for locals or past experience. How early do we need to get there in the morning before it becomes gridlock? Any tips on parking or anything else for the day? I have our crew scanner that I'll bring. Good shoes, hats and ponchos. I'm so used to being a part of the race that I don't know what to do as a spectator....

The last time I went to the 500 was 20 years ago and the traffic was bad by about 10am. They have shuttles running around now that my friend said helped last year since they didn't have to hike as far to get in. The new grandstands they are working on are very nice so once you get in you should be good.
On your way in there will be a cluster of trailers selling souvenirs, one of the radio vendors should be able to give you a list of all the teams frequencies to program the scanner for the day. Being able to hear the teams hash out what to do about problems made it even more interesting. Besides the radio bring binoculars, it can be hard to see whats going on on the other side of the track without them. Have fun and take pictures. My Dad took me to my first 500 when I was twelve and even though I had been to other NASCAR races that was incredible to see.
Did you read the article in Teh Mag?
Good Doctor----Our coverage was on how to do the Rolex 24 at Daytona--- not the 500--- that's the race where they turn left......and then left again.....and again...
I'd arrive as early as you can make it. The Daytona 500's appeal is mainly the spectacle of the event. The actual race is kinda boring (besides the first 10 laps and the final 10 laps) , but there are so many sounds, smells and sights that it makes for a very entertaining day.
They will have some sort of concert before the race, and all kinds of pomp and circumstance. Getting there early will allow you to take it all in.
If I was coming from out of town, I'd park in one of the remote lots as it's much easier to leave after the race. The area immediately surrounding the track will be a nightmare.
Have fun--- it's a good time!
