My wife had someone from the neighboring county's jail calling her a couple times a day for nearly a month. The incarcerated thought it was her own significant other. Since they're collect calls that cost $10 to accept, they must have agreed that she'd just leave messages when she was supposed to say her name. Things like "This is a collect call from the Posey County Jail from..'Happy Birthday honey, I love you!' would you like to accept the charges?". The messages were never that interesting, but pretty personal considering that she didn't even know this person's actual phone number. Not wanting to pay the $10, my wife called the jail and told them the situation, but nothing came of it. She finally had to accept the charges and tell the lady that she had the wrong number.
I also get the calls about debt reduction, etc. I always want to berkeley with them. "Yeah, I don't have a car payment, a mortgage, or any credit card debt, or any debt for that matter. Wait, I do owe a buddy of mine $30 from a poker game. Think you can help me out with that? See if you can get him to take $20.
One of the big collection agencies just got fined $3.2 million for illegal practices and harassing people - there's a story about it here: http://www.startribune.com/business/214846661.html

Somehow my phone number got tied into the lifeline systems data base. Going on two years now. Every time they schedule a conference call, the phone starts ringing. There are days when I come home and there are half a dozen missed calls on the answering machine from them. Sometimes its in the middle of the night. Can't get them to remove me no matter how many time I try to talk nicely to the person on the other end. Lately I have just been answering the phone and telling people the conference call has been cancelled. See where that gets me.

so far that hasn't helped AT ALL to stop the robo calls we get …3 - 4 every day … same product … I've reported it several times …. doesn't change anything 
Zombie canoe, but if it is a collection agency, the next time that they call ask for a supervisor. Tell the supervisor that if you get the call again, you are going to report them to the CFPB, FCC, FDCPA, SCRA, UDAAP, and the TCPA. That will light some fires to actually stop calling you, because that is the stuff that will really get them in trouble. Like, BIG FINES trouble.
Then, if they keep doing it, actually report them. I would start with the FCC, CFPB, and FDCPA out of that list.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is no joke and these people know it. Tell them your lawyer has been telling you about it.

Nope, not gonna happen. They will drop it like it is a hot potato. Too much effort on their part to go through with anything if there is a lawyer involved.

Not completely on topic, but I've been getting letters and state tax forms for a guy at my house named Sal. I got so many, I started ignoring them. Maybe I need a big ole "return to sender" stamp.
So during an "investigation" by an intelligence officer, he asks me, "Do you know Sal _?"
I say, "No, but I get his mail."
His response, "Well, Sal uses your address every time he gets arrested, and apparently that is a lot."
Glad no one has attempted to serve him at my house.
