Actually, I've seen something that somewhat resembles the rumors. I was hanging out on top of a SoCal mountain that's well known in the canyon driving scene one night, with about eight other people, and one of us notices an unusual light coming slowly toward us from the other side of the mountains (the High Desert side.) This thing gradually makes its way over us, and we can see that it's kind of an arrowhead shape, really quiet, quite big, and has some kind of protrusion on the bottom, which I thought was an air intake like you see on artists' renderings of the Aurora at the time. The thing went over us, flew to another uninhabited area of the hills, and slowly descended into it. A whole bunch of us saw the same thing and had the same story when we compared. None of us were quite sure how low it was, but it was either the size of an airliner and flying quite low, or high up and the size of an aircraft carrier.
I thought maybe it was the Aurora at the time. A few years later I came across the persistent rumors of a stealth blimp that's supposedly being operated by the Air Force, and there's been everything from published concepts by manufacturers to tons of sightings of the thing, plus it's all reasonably conventional technology. The thing we saw looked a hell of a lot like the renderings of the blimp I've seen, and considering that Edwards AFB was less than 100 miles away in a straight line, and that there are a few plausible reasons for them to have been testing it over us (handling in the air conditions above mountains would be my guess), I'm reasonably convinced that it's what we saw.
