We’ve occasionally touched on displaying Hot Wheels. I think we can also have a thread on decorating with them. First up: Hot Wheels clock.

I was given a wooden art-fair style clock with small shelves intended for Hot Wheels-type cars, one at each hour mark. There’s an extra shelf at 12:00.

I’ve decided to use movie/TV cars, and to try to relate the position with the car somehow. I'm hoping to make it sort of a puzzle for pop-culture literate but non-car people visiting over the holidays.

Examples:

12:00 Hover Conversion Delorean

1:00 General Lee

6:00 Lotus 7 (Well, a green/yellow Caterham)

7:00 Aston Martin DB5 in silver

If necessary, I could go with an approximate relationship. For example, the Delorean could also go to 10. 10:04 is close to 10:00, right? Or 8, because 1955 (hours) is almost to 8:00.

Some of my available cars (I have more, just haven't dug them out yet):

Ferrari 308

Batmobile

Ecto-1

A-Team van

Jetsons capsule car

The Homer

Yellow Submarine

Bandit Trans Am

Snoopy’s doghouse

Doc Hudson

Suggestions for car/position?

My wife bought our son a glass lamp that I've filled with some of my old Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. Next up are 'race track' book ends with Hot Wheels attached.

Does taking a real car and painting it to look like a HotWheels car count? A few years ago, when we lived on 3.5 acres, I found the rolling Bradley GT for $150. It was complete less engine and doors. We found a HotWheels car that had a similar shape. I painted the car to look just like it. We used it in our Christmas display. I put a big bow around it, and had a blow up Santa standing next to it. The idea was that it was a present that Santa was giving (I couldn't figure out how to easily build a life size HotWheels box, so I just used a bow).

I have done Christmas trees in nothing but Hot Wheels, Matchbox, and little motorcycles.

I have daughters. They would not be impressed. But their Dad would be. Very cool idea!

I'm terrible at this game but here's a picture of the Simpson car and the Homer. Sitting in my shop.

I've been wanting to do this, but don't want to spring for a new grill...

I've found grills at the local pick-and-pull. Sometimes you have to get creative and find a grill that you can saw out some of the sections to make larger openings

I like the grille idea. We use printers racks to hold Lego Mini figures. There is another one on the adjoining wall since these two pretty much got filled up.

That wall was revised every couple months, the Vintage Racing and Dragstrip Demons were the best though.

In reply to slantvaliant:

Let's see if I can play this game...

  • The Delorean should be 8, because 88 miles per hour.

  • Doc Hudson's number was 51, so I would suggest 5

  • 6 different actors have played Batman in feature films

  • Snoopy goes at either 1 (for WW1), or 3 (The Red Baron flew a Fokker triplane) Or maybe 10 ("Snoopy" was the nickname of the Apollo 10 Lunar module)

  • Yellow Submarine was the Beatle's 10th album

  • The Ecto-1 should be at 1 (duh)

  • Ferrari 308- 3 is close to 3:08. Also, 3 different 308's were used in the filming of Magnum PI

  • The Bandit Trans AM goes at 7 (The original was a '77, and Burt Reynolds released 77 special edition signed New Bandits)

  • The Jetsons go at 11:00 (The time George starts work every day)

  • We could put The Homer at 2 (for the 2 bubble domes)

  • How about 8 for the A-Team (the numeric telephone number for the letter "T"). Or 2 (the numeric telephone number for the letter "A")

In reply to SVreX: if your "Facts" are true, that's a fairly impressive recollection
