So as a crazy California surfer dude who has never seen a deer on the road or really up close. If you kill a dear with a car do you get to keep it.
Like if its out of hunting season, if you hurt it does someone come and scoop it up from the state wildlife committee and whack it or rehabilitate it. .
The bits of venison jerky that my neighbor makes after hunting is pretty darn good and I mean it does owe you some car parts
I imagine you could take it home.. most of the time you find the dear you hit dead on the side of road somewhere. They usually do not survive the collision, no matter how fast they get up and run away

Check local laws, the one that did $4000.00 damage to my truck needed killin but ran off. A "dead" one was loaded in a van once that found a second life, the result was bad.

In Michigan you get out, finish it off if need be, call the cops, and they give you a tag for it, free of charge.
Yeah, if its still alive, a cop or animal control officer will come finish it for you. They will write you a ticket to let you keep it if you want to.

OMG - the Forty and Eight! there used to be one kept in the storage barns behind my house when I was growing up in Sodus, NY. They raised money for Cystic Fibrosis kids for a few years. They still around?
Road kill deer is iffy. The side or part that took the impact will be all kinds of FUBAR. Given the right speed, there won't be much worth eating.
Around here they pick them up all the time. One of the ones my son hit was picked up by an old guy in a truck. Don't call the cops, they will want to keep it for themselves.
The one I saw being processed was pretty bad off. Less than 30% of the meat was salvageable. If the gut busts open it's not worth stopping because it makes a NASTY mess. If you are lucky, the head gets hit and snaps the neck.
Go buy a good steak. It tastes better to me.
