During my brief drive after work today I turned up the radio a tad and heard the last bit of a song that was without question played by Metallica.
But I didn't recognize it and got out of the car before they said who it was.
Do they have a new single out?
They did release a new song a few weeks ago. I think they have an album coming out in the next few months. I heard a little bit of it and it sounds like they are trying to go back to their old sound.
Yup. It's not terrible either, I could deal with some additional screaming guitar riffs, possibly a solo, but it's not bad.

Heh, the local metal show on the local college station played it live within an hour of its release... right up until the first F-bomb, anyway. Ooooops.
It sounds like their old stuff with newer sound. They lost the raw edge they had and everything is a little too clean I think. This song would sound much better a little less refined and rougher I think. Video for those that are interested:

That said, I do like it more than their last stuff. Hope the rest of the album is as good!
That Song rocks. I'm back in 1986 in my brothers amc concord with a Jean jacket and a mullet.

I like it. Of course the real early thrash Metallica was a bit before my time but I do remember when the black album dropped.
Not really a fan. It just sounds gimmicky? And I don't like the guitar tone they've had on the last few albums.
But it's hard to live up to the first 4 albums they put out (I like "the black album" too though).
Me likey......now if the rest of the album sounds like this instead of that DeathMagnetic/StAnger E36 M3, I will be glad to buy this. Back to the good sounds......

I get it now
That was definitely the song I heard. And I like it!
But then again I pretty much like all their stuff...

Blame the producers and sound engineers. Seriously, making it sound "clean and polished" justisfies their job and existence. If they were to do a small club tour (ha! That'd never happen) you'd likely get to hear the new stuff with some screaming shrill guitar tones and possibly (but less likely) some crunch from the bass.

No, it's not the production value. I'm fine with that.
But the distinctive "scooped out midrange" amp settings they used all through the first 5 albums is no longer present. And to me, it doesn't sound like Metallica.

Thats what it is. Thank you. I've been trying to figure out wtf the sound was. That and let's be honest, James hetfield just doesn't sound advice good sober.
