Whooooa here's a big change I didn't know about before, in Win10 you have no control over update installation, it's all handled automatically and there's nothing you can do about it

Edit: Here's how to get back some control over updates...it's not pretty:

Edit2: Gonna try the Professional Edition registry hack here and see how it works:

Mine did it unbeknownst to me last week. I have used it at work for about 8 months no issues, but it didn't like my gaming pc's hardware combo and started crashing a lot. So I did the rollback through the recovery option, and it was still funky when back to win7. I'm now doing a complete reinstall from scratch of win7. Yay.
I installed the multiple desktop app on my Win 7 box at work. It is slow and you can't move the apps but it works. Is win 10 better? How is the multiple monitor support? On Linux, DEs are starting to suck. Everyone is using one screen now for mobile so developers don't care about multiple desktops or screens anymore.
Win10 multi-monitor is at least as good as Win7s (only possible regression I can think of is the single-monitor lock screen). The virtual desktops work well, to switch virtual desktops (or workspaces, if you prefer) you click a button on the taskbar which shows all the windows in the current desktop on the corresponding monitor, and your list of virtual desktops at the bottom. You drag a window onto one of those virtual desktops to move it. I just wish you could right-click a task on the taskbar and then "send to virtual desktop 1/2/3" etc like in Linux.
On Linux my favorite DE is MATE right now, which hasn't got the touch-friendliness memo (for a phone or tablet, Hildon is good). Cinnamon looks interesting too.
I will look for the drag option on Win 7. Mate is driving me crazy right now because it has a bug where on my right screen it won't paste from the clipboard if the info was copied from the middle or left screen. Maybe it isn't a mate problem at all. Enlightenment crashed hard while I was setting it up so that is out for now. KDE reminds me of Microsoft windows so Cinnamon is out. When I get time I will figure it out.
My mother installed Win10 and started asking tons of questions. I said "sorry but I told you not to install it." Tough love can be for parents too.
I'll have to try that MATE cross-monitor pasting thing and see if I have the same problem, I didn't notice it when I was using multiple monitors on my laptop working rally control about a month ago.
My case is probably special because I run 3 separate X sessions instead the Xinerama all one desktop. I am running Mint LMDE and I think I made a mistake. Right out of the box Mate would only display the back ground on screen 0. I might be going back to Debian Sid this Christmas break if this continues.
I'm surprised copying and pasting between X sessions ever worked at all! Have a look at this:

Update: It just lets you see which updates are available and lets you choose whether to download and install all of them or do nothing. This does give you the opportunity to see and block updates, so it's something.

I never had a problem until this install. I discovered it works until I wake it up from sleep. Then it messes up. The link was for VMs but thanks anyway.
I recognized you on slashdot after I moded up your post. I wonder how many are on both sites.
Four machines updated to Win10, all four working fine. I have some complaints about how MS handled the push and some complaints about the new OS but the upgrade process itself was relatively painless. The hardest part was getting a WinXP virtual machine working with the old image. (Stupid embedded systems with their archaic software!)

I tried to run the upgrade about 6 times and it failed every time so I gave up.

Stories I've heard, if on 8, you had to step to 8.1 and then the win10

Mine upgraded itself... I was displeased... The thread on privacy settings is valid so appreciate that.

I'm on 7. From googling the error code I got there was no good solution other than disabling drivers and removing devices and keep trying. I don't have a problem with 7 so I'm just going to leave it alone.
I missed the deadline is there anyway I can legally still get it for free?

I went from 8.1 to 10 the week before last. I was surprised by how well it worked. I'll give Microsoft and Lenovo credit for a pretty seamless process.
In reply to slowride: It worked on my PC but I have trouble putting it on my Microsoft surface, any ideas? It says download is only available in the APP store
updated from Win 7 over two weeks ago
no issues at all
My Mothers box slowed to a crawl. It took 10 minutes to log in and another 10 minutes to bring up the task manager which said nothing was running. Something was on the hard drive continuously leaving very little I/O for anything else. After 2 hours it stopped, I ran a virus scan and it showed nothing. I think the virus was Microsoft windows 10. After a reboot it was back to unusable.
She ended up paying someone to install Linux. I am ashamed, I didn't have time but the year of break downs leaves me with little time to do anything. At least for me the Microsoft Windows 10 nightmare is over forever.
