Can't say if all stores do this, worth a look. I went there Saturday, starts at 9:00, at 9:03 the long table was full of kids and Dads that couldn't hold a hammer. With a 2 year old in tow, we took a bag of Bird House to go. One day when it's slow at home .....
This week you got a bird house with a pool.
I saw this going on at my local HD when I was there on Saturday. Looked like kids having some fun building from the brief glance I gave the area before getting back to my own errand.
yep, our local HD did this when my kids were little. we didn't go to every one, but each of my girls went to a few.
You know how every Home Depot has one guy that actually knows stuff? He was also the one that was working the kids workshop this weekend at my local Big Orange Store. I had to tear him away from making sure everyone knew which end of the hammer to use because I needed a 4x8 sheet cut on the panel saw and when I presented the regular Home Depot worker with my dimension in metric I managed to just completely lock him up.
Lowes does something similar. I was at both stores on Saturday returning some unused tile and the hammering sounded like a barn raising competition. It was right by the return desk, you could see the strained smiles on staff faces.
Later I passed a mom carrying a birdhouse as she tried to cope with two very excited kids.
Yep, big fun. Both my boys have been multiple times. They always have fun and there are usually a few other parents muddling their way through, some parents that clearly taught their kids how to use a hemmer and then some helicopter parents so bad they should have kits to keep the parents busy. I highly ressomend it.
I've always felt that these were totally what GRMers would undertake as our retirement jobs. That and programming AI software to assist people with vehicle maintence, repair and general home how-to and upkeep (except for organization advice)
I went to HD this past weekend and needed to buy some lumber. This placed me in the same corner of the building as approximately 50 kids building birdhouses. Each nail seemed to require something like 6,425 blows to drive home.
Like one of Dante's circles of hell.
They will also do special sessions for groups (church, temple, etc).
The local Chabad had done it several times with projects geared towards holidays, like building a menorah.
