Saw that and laughed.  You know the officer that got a laugh out of it.

I have a sense of humor so I see the joke and I get it, I don't even have a fully formed opinion on what I think about it. I do see an issue with shades of gray and if this is ok then where is the line. Here is my beef.

This is an 18 yo kid. The TV spot claims it is a $75K truck, not including the lights which cost him $5k more. Where the berkeley does an 18 yo kid get that kind of $? If he earned it then great go do whatever you want, if mommy and daddy financed this then they are just begging to have an adult that doesn't have an understanding of money and earning their way through life. I am not bashing rich people here either, be rich I am good with that but teach your kids fiscal responsibility.

I wonder at what point LE would say he is under the line?   Is the green stripe the issue?  Or the world "patrol" ?

What if he removed the word "patrol" and leaves the green stripe?  Or vice versa?  Would removing the lights alone make it legal?

Seems like a pretty subjective law if you ask me.

The paint scheme is funny, that's not what he was cited for.

He was cited for having red and blue lights. That color scheme is reserved for law enforcement vehicles. Just like flashing red or red/white is reserved for fire and ambulances. These are important visual cues.

If that guy pulls up somewhere with those lights on, the first thing people will think is that he is legit law enforcement. You have to take a while to actually read what the truck says on the side to realize he's not.

Add in, this is Florida, lots of people may not speak (let alone read) English fluently. The people most likely to deal with the Border Patrol are also most likely to have trouble with English.

This was very clearly set up to appear to look as much like a legit border patrol vehicle as possible. The font is the same. The seal of the department is the same.

Imagine this guy rolling up on a bunch of drunk women in Miami...

The more I think about this, the more I dislike it. It's the equivalent of someone putting on a police uniform with a badge and everything, and thinking it's okay because it says "Popo" on the back instead of "Police".

This is explicitly stated in the article. It's the Blue and Red lights.

Without those he may or may not have been cited for the other elements of how the vehicle is decorated, but the use of those color lights is unambiguously illegal.

The reds and blues, even on an unmarked car are enough in some places to be hit with the charge of Impersinationg a Police Officer.  And, that is a Felony charge!

Some stuff is law.  I got pulled over because somebody before I got it ten years ago, put blue 194 bulbs in the front markers of my Volvo.

Also, if you buy a school bus to turn into a thing other than a school bus, it can't stay yellow.

AIUI, in CA you can have the lights on the car you just can't activate them while driving it on the road.  Otherwise the prop department for most police shows would have all been arrested long ago! :)

I was doing 75 mph when headlights came out of nowhere and followed closely, next thing I get is headlight wig-wag.  You know, alternating flash of left & right headlights.  Aw crap, I eased over.  A damn 1986 Monte Carlo blows by me.

Told a cop friend and he said he could be arrested for impersonation.  Same here?
