We have an old 1967 IH 434 diesel tractor that has an ongoing issue. Whenever the temperature drops much below freezing the starter either refuses to turn over or turns over very slowly. Jumping the starter directly from another vehicle sometimes works but not always. I've checked all of the connections and cleaned everything up. I assume I'm looking at having the starter rebuilt at this point. Any other suggestions?
Lots of potential issues here. First off, battery output drops with temperature. Also, oil is like molasses when it gets really cold. And yes, a tired starter likely isn't helping. Maybe try a block heater?
I agree it's probably time for a starter rebuild.
A gear reduction starter is what I would recommend
5w-40 might help. Also a block heater. But I'd be looking to rebuild thst starter and also check battery health.
