I have a regular tartan I bought at a renaissance festival about 4 years ago on a lark. I've worn it to some events as an alternative to dressing up. I've always liked the Utilikilt design, but never wanted to spend that kind of $$$.
There's a 3 day event with a theme coming up, and a friend is having a formal "cheese ball" next month. Everyone is encouraged to dress up fancy on a budget, like tuxedo shirts from Goodwill and prom dresses from the Salvation Army. I decided it's time to kilt-up again. Amazon to the rescue, just ordered a Sport Utility Kilt from Damn Near Kilt Em for $80.

I've found over the years, they are very popular with the women.

I've never wanted one.
Somethin' about wearing a skirt just feels wrong.
Skirts are fantastic, especially when worn in a more 'free' style as kilts traditionally are. There may or may not have been a time in college where I was dared to push social bounds, and it was amazing. I've since contemplated moving to a tropical island where the sarong is fair game for both sexes.
I've got one for my clan in the Ancient Hunting tartan that was purchased and tailored for me on a trip to the Scottish Highlands, as well as a Utilikilt. I've worn the clan one to various special events, and the utilikilt to a couple of the highland games. They are a pain to drive in, but other than that, not to bad.

My wife is a kilt fancier. That is why I curretnly have 3 kilts. I have one Utilikilt and 2 511 tatical duty kilts.
A heavy canvas or khaki skirt with cargo pockets seems like a good idea for hiking until you get your first nutsack tick.
I have never worn one myself but everytime I go to some sort of earthy folk festival I see people doing things like the hammer throw wearing them and think... damn... that's a great idea! These homos have been drinking all day and they can just go without all the drama of using their hands (brilliant!). But then I see the price tag and realize that they are priced just like women's clothes. Too rich for my blood for some crap they would be selling to big ladies at Lane Bryant if it wasn't for the Scots and Irish.
Had to go find the pictures. Me in front of my clan's castle in Scotland (Eileen Donan):
Chicks dig the kilt. Don't know why...

Only a skirt if you wear underwear.

Kilts are probably not the best choice if you plan to do a lot of welding.

I'd like to try one of the utilikilt / 511 numbers, but I don't have enough Scottish in my background to pull it off. My legs are OK (it's the gut that's the problem) but I don't have any boots between a pair of light-duty Lands End hikers and my giant-ass Herman Munster steel toe Docs.
Mrs. Duke and I go to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival every year and one of our pastimes is kilt-counting. Numbers were down this year.
I was always told we were Scot-Irish, which I really have no idea what that is. But I've been told our DNA is of Danish origin. So looks like we were pillagers in Scotland before being tricked by the English to go over to Ireland for free land. So how does one go about finding what their tartan would be?

Find your tartan, go commando!
sonofogun. Looks like we could be the McKay clan.
I was at a swing dance festival this weekend. 200 people dancing in a room with limited ventilation when it's 80 and high humidity outside... things got warm. I decided "berkeley pants". Wore a kilt for the biggest night of the festival. Sooooo much more comfortable. Got lots of compliments about how it was very stylish and a generally brilliant idea for dealing with the weather. Kilt looked really cool doing all the swively and spinny moves from swing dancing.
I got mine from www.sportkilt.com many years ago. Very reasonable prices. Removed their patch and sewed in a large wood button to help keep it secure around my skinny waist.

I read that as…“my wife is a kilt fancier, that is why I currently have three kids”

My wife says she likes kilts, but, and I mean no offense, I just crack up every time I see a man wearing my grandmothers skirt. I couldn't bring myself to wear one. But I guess I applaud those that have the cajones to wear one, but I don't want to see your cajones.
Our British car show at the Scottish Highland Games is this weekend at Furman University north of Greenville. Several of our members will be out in their kilts (snicker snicker).
Aye, Chris V, another MacKenzie! My wife is a MacKenzie, my ancestors were MacIvers, which is a sept of MacKenzie, so I wear the Mackenzie tartan at Celtic events. We were at the last clan international gathering in Strathpeffer in 2010, if you ever get the chance, go! It's held every 5 years, so this is the year. Lots of great historic tours, the people are friendly, you get to meet the clan chief, the Earl of Cromartie, who is a cool, regular guy, and get a tour of Castle Leod, the clan seat.
The last time we were at Eilean Donan, the tour guide was a MacRae, and he saw my wife's MacKenzie scarf. He stopped his talk, came over and said "Lassie, when ye fought for Charlie we were right beside ye." Pretty cool.
I do not wear pants unless someone is paying me to.
That said I'm not a fan of the utili-kilt, kilts should not have pockets...

Took the words out of my mouth, I own three kilts at present and have worn them on occasion for the last 25-30 years. I had one tailored for my wedding in my family tartan and really enjoy wearing it and should more often.
Ren faire tartan and an Amerikilt. I really need to get a few more.
