Whelp, I guess I've got a new one to fill out when signing waivers. Mum had a stroke this morning at 50. She's stable but I don't know much more than that, what with her not having a phone at the hospital and me being on the other side of the country. These next few days will be interesting.
Wishing your mom the best of luck and medical science. Hope all turns out well.
My grandfather fell over of a heart attack in 1964 at age 53. My dad had a 5 bypass heart surgery in 1994 at age 59.
I'm 58.
I wish your mom the best.
I'll be pulling for a full and complete recovery. Not being able to be of assistance is difficult and it may be frustrating or depressing as well. But I suspect that your mother enjoys and appreciates that you're finding success in doing what you enjoy, even if it's taken you miles away.
That's rough news. Hope all goes well.
Good luck to your mom. They can do pretty amazing things after strokes, if you have any questions feel free to message or email me at Wally13us at yahoo dot com.

And you've been to the cardiologist for your stress test, right? Speaking as a member of the zipper club...
To G Body, best wishes to your Mom.
That's tough news to recieve. Hope she's doing okay, and you as well.

Hope your mum got to the hospital quickly and recovers fully.
I come from a family history of heart problems. Previous generations on both sides died mostly from it. My dad was the oldest one ever on his side when he died of heart attack at 62. My older cousins started having heart attacks in their 50's like previous generations but survived the first ones due to modern medical. When I bought a home in FL to move South when I was 45 one of my criteria was being close to hospitals because of the family history and knowing it would probably be my last home, expecting to die in my 50's. Picked an area near a hospital with a cardiac unit with a great reputation. Did the snow bird thing for a few years then moved to FL full time at 50. First heart attack with stent installs at 58. Been back a couple times since, most recent was this past Feb and angioplasty again.. They keep me alive and next week I'll have lived longer than my dad did. I expect I'll have strokes before I'm done. Older cousins have been dropping and I don't think any made it to 70 yet with all having had multiple heart attacks also plus the strokes I haven't had yet.
My younger brother's the only one in my generation who hasn't had heart attacks or gotten stents before one occurred. He lives out in the woods in a little converted hunting lodge off a dirt road. If he has a heart attack someone will find him dead already. I expect a call one day.
Know the symptoms as you get older and don't hesitate a minute to get to a hospital if you don't feel well. They have very good success rates with strokes now but the key is to know the signs and get there quick. You have a family history now so use that knowledge, be prepared.
Hoping for a full recovery for your Mom.

If I do physical work and I mention my arm is sore my wife freaks out.
This used to be funny but now we're all PC.

Still funny. F the PC.

Best of luck and medical science to your mom!
Crossing my fingers that intervention was early and effective for your mom.
Best of luck GBody, and yes; my Mom survived colon cancer and breast cancer ( and 7 kids). With my history (maybe yours) I looked into a medical proxy and a Will.
Hi G_Body_Man
Best wishes to your mom.
I'm 56 and my brother died suddenly from an aortic bifurcation (blew a hose in car guy speak) when he was 55 and my mom died three years later from essentially the same thing when she was 78.
Right after my mom died, I got a cardiologist and took a DNA test (21 specific tests actually) to see if I had any of the genes associated with the disorder and two echocardiograms spaced apart two years.
Apparently, I'm fine...arterial wall thickness, etc. are all good.
Sorry to hear this! I wish your ma a speedy recovery.
I hope for a speedy and complete recovery for your Mum.
It pays to know your family history. I was experiencing some "indigestion" while playing hockey. Over the course of 3 or 4 months the onset of it moved from the third period to the first couple of shifts, so I eventually went to my doctor. I told her what it felt like and she thought it was acid reflux, but sent me to a cardiologist just in case. He also diagnosed acid reflux until he asked about family history. My mother was one of nine children, the four boys all had heart problems and the oldest made it to 54 years old. Four of the five girls have had stents or bypass surgery, so I was instantly scheduled for a catheterization and they found 4 blockages and now I'm a member of the zipper club. Without knowledge of the family's heart issues I'd have probably continued playing hockey until an ambulance was needed.
Brother in law ran marathons. Died of a heart attack at age 64. It was the "widow maker clog" , the left descending coronary artery. That one clogs you are dead unless you have a cardiac team nearby. My sister found him on the floor probably an hour later.
That happened to a friend also. He was in the emergency room for a "minor" heart attack when he had the 2nd one, the widow maker one. The team cleaned it out almost immediately .
Same thing happened to my dad at age 55. Minor heart attack, next morning the big one while still in the hospital. They scooped him up where he fell and un-clogged him. He has had several more since then and is still living at age 81.
My doctor says I have no sign of clogging in my arteries - age 63 - fingers crossed.

So sorry to hear about your Mom. Prayers to her.
It was slightly expressed early about getting tested yourself. I think when you look at your family hx you can take this as an advantage. Colon cancer runs in my family. We all had colonoscopys early and did whatever the recommendations are. I take whatever supplements are healthy for my innards.
I mostly eat super healthy and try to stay thinner than average. Why? My family history of cancer, heart disease and arthritis and longevity scares me. I feel most of my old injuries, broken bones and a blown lumbar disc. But I can't see going down with all of the above, or being sidelined and living a long life with injuries. I'm looking at what I have seen as a blessing because I can work to avoid this. If I am going to live a long time, I want to be super healthy and active.
Sorry, really sorry for your Mom. You owe it to her not to let this happen to you.
best of luck
Thanks for the support everyone. It's been a strange past 24 hours. From the sound of things, it appears it was minor but I'm hoping to hear more tomorrow.
