Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, and while I don't agree with the law, I choose to respect the law and not to break it.

My cheap Radio Shack one has paid for itself countless times over.

If nothing else, it lets you know where they are. While I don't make a habit of doing any more than 9 over, I know better than to hit the gas and pass some left lane hogging berkeleytard if the little red light is blinking.

Pretty sure I'm getting a V1 for xmas.

I like the features of the V1 … tells me how many, and where they are

and my offer to sachilles ( OP ) is still open … assuming you decide to get rid of it

Never found the need. I have found that as long as I stay at not more than ten over, I am good. No tickets.

Once, riding with a friend to NH. The detector would go off and we didn't see a thing and we were near the speed limit.

Then I was following my SIL north from Florida. We were driving at around the speed limit and several times he suddenly slowed down, for no visible reason. At a rest stop, I asked him why. He said his radar detector went off.

so my opinion, the make you paranoid.

My V1 was a permanent fixture on the windshield when I was daily driving my WRX. Once I switched to the truck as a DD, I found that (surprise!) I drive it differently and I don't need it. It still comes along if I'm taking a long trip or driving a Porsche.

I've found Waze to be very helpful on long highway trips, although I can't hear it very well if the radio is on, and I don't care if it's raining in 500 feet. Waze was handy this morning when I was towing the trailer and it gave me an alert that there was debris in the left lane half a mile ahead.

I still prefer the V1 for moving quickly across empty, twisty country roads.

I have a BELTronics radar detector that I have had for almost 10 years now. It has worked very well for years, and has the VG2 protection on it. Ever since cars started to come with radar cruise control (like Audi's), it constantly gets false K Band warnings. It has become so annoying that I just unplug it on my commute and depend on Waze for speed trap warnings.

Waze is awesome, BTW.

The only two vehicles that consistently fool my V1 are the big Infiniti SUV (they give me two laser alerts when they approach) and Chevy Trailblazer brake lights.

I use a passport 9500. Tells me where the red light cameras are before I get to the intersection. Picks up the cops on patrol well before I see them typically. I'm only doing about ten over or less, but I like having the information.

I use Waze and a Passport 9500i. Both help out a lot, the 9500i is more useful on the back roads that make up my commute, and Waze is more helpful on highway trips.

in the case of my last road trip, all the radar were rolling …no one sitting still (except one NCHP) … Waze would't help all that much, since it can't tell me where the money grab is … LOL

plus I don't have a smart phone

In a box head to cincy, it might be largely ornamental, but I'm doing the upgrade and adding the android bluetooth setup. There is an aftermarket app that interfaces with it, that should overlap on to Waze. Done deal. Thanks for playing everyone.

Next up....to you use your factory radio?

My Cayman has the factory premium Bose system, with with a bunch of speakers, six CD changer, navigation and built in phone. I've never played a CD on it, I've tried the nav maye two or three times and I've never messed with the phone. On the rare occasion that the radio is on at all, it's tuned to CBS AM news out of New York. Off the top of my head, I can't even remember how to change the stations.

I do, however, like how it lights up and says "Porsche" when I turn it on.

In reply to sachilles:

Yes. Factory actually sounds really good in my car. Plus steering wheel controls. In my EK civic? Hell no. Threw a nice Pioneer deck in there a long time ago. Plus amp and nice speakers.

Haven't used my detector since I replace my windshield 2 years ago, gave it away white elephant style that xmas. Plus, my dashcam currently takes up the cigarette lighter port.

I just drive slow enough to not get a ticket. Driving fast on public roads is stressful, and I'm not into stress.
