I constantly have long winded tirades going through my head, and the thought occurred to me that I should get a blog. Then I realized I'm gainfully employed, and there are literally millions of other shiny happy people with the exact same idea.

So, the question: Does anyone care about blogs anymore? Or is that not a thing any longer? Are there any worth reading?

It depends. I've been told by several different folks I need to write one, both for my parenting experiences, and daily life. So, people do want to read other people. However, its become extremely difficult to sort through the chaff to get to the good stuff.

why get a blog that costs money to operate when you can do all your venting on sites paid for by others?

facebook is a good example of this, but the "off topic" area of pretty much any forum also works well..

Nobody was ever interested in long winded tirades. Good writing, regardless of the topic, will get attention. And blogs (one of the ugliest words in the english language) can be revenue generating, which is the reason most of the ones worth reading exist.

i know a few people that love long winded tirades... especially if they wrote them.. they are the people that call you a "sheeple" if you don't want to read 4 computer monitors worth of run on sentences about the illuminati..

Nobody has cared about blogs in years. Since google shut down Reader, even less. Nowadays, you may as well be putting your note in a bottle and throwing it out to sea.

That said, I do think people want and enjoy good content. I just think until a new method of effectively aggregating self-published content comes along -- and I do think it will -- then you're probably better off with medium or something like that... an existing platform.

Everything mentioned in here confirms what I was thinking.

@Tim: I was hoping the current generation of e-readers would kickstart this sort of thing, but only the newest ones have any real connectivity capability.

In the old days, people would go downtown and stand on a soapbox to deliver their rants. It was more entertaining that way.

Because some people are interested in owning and controlling their content, which isn't always possible with third party sites. Not everybody likes to be a sharecropper on 's turf.

So yeah, I still blog on my own domain on my own server. Yeah, that's a bit extreme and my blog likely has a lot fewer readers than the number of readers in this post. I do it mostly for me and am still surprised when I actually hear back from people...

I also make -$350/year from the endeavour.

What do you consider a blog? I read any number of news aggregation & commentary blogs throughout the day, every day, from AutoBlog to SlashDot to Wired and InstaPundit. I also follow a number of photo blogs and other social media feeds.

nderwater. I think the idea that a publishing company has a 'blog' is a silly, faddish construct (that I have admittedly been guilty of falling for in the past). Publishers don't need blogs, because they HAVE a publishing platform already. They have articles and commentary already. Blogs are -- at best -- redundant.

Blogs are for self-publishers who don't have a platform already.

Now, muddying the issue is the fact that some of those examples started out as blogs, but they have long since outgrown the form.

Slashdot never was a blog. It was a news aggregation site. Wired is a magazine, not a blog. Instapundit is just a web site with some commentary. Autoblog was a clearly a blog once, and still adheres fairly closely to the form, but I think they are clearly outgrowing it and becoming a general publication.

Use wordpress. It will let you blog like a real website. As you get more tech savvy, you can install new features. Develop your own content and see where it goes from there. The big pluses to wordpress are that its almost infinitely extendable and you can write when you feel like it and set the publish date for your articles to sometime in the future. This way you can always generate new content every week, or 2 weeks or once a month, etc.

You'll need to log in to post.
