I remember when the New York State Police had a fourth-gen Chevrolet Camaro as one of its cars patroling the Southern State Parkway.
No, but Virginia State Police used 1985-1986 Monte Carlo SSs along with a confiscated 280zx turbo and either a 1982 or 1984 Corvette on I-95 back in the day. I know the 82 and 84 vettes were totally different cars, but it was a long time ago when I passed him while he was on the shoulder writing a ticket...
FL had some 1980-81 Turbo Trans Ams as well.
Up here in MA, they have had all sorts of funky stuff over the years, including this:
From what I heard, this was a property seizure back in the day. They painted it up with the livery and usually roll it out for special occasions/car shows/community outreach stuff. I have seen it a few times prowling around the back roads near my hometown.
I think I may even still have that issue of Car and Driver in a box somewhere.
When I was in high school in the early 1970s one of my classmates got an ex-highway patrol Dodge Monaco. 440 engine, cop tires, cop suspension, cop brakes - it was essentially the Blues Brothers car before there was a Blues Brothers movie. On the other hand my small home town police department used a Rambler Ambassador for their police car, which was pretty weak sauce in comparison.
One of my uncles was one of the original officers in the Minnesota highway patrol back in 1929, they drove Model A Fords. It must have been a treat driving around in one of those in below zero weather.
