Before leaving for the office today, I had the dogs out--the usual. So the bigger one is sniffing the ground, stops and then slides the side of her head along something in the grass. You know what's coming: A few seconds later there's four puppy legs wiggling towards the sky. I know it makes them stinky, but I couldn't stop her. She just looked so happy. And then she did the whole thing again.

There were a few leaves still stuck on her back when she trotted in.

Squirrel pee. My dog Dixie can't get enough of it. At least she doesn't roll in poop often, unless it's rabbit poop. They must make dog treats out of that stuff.

At one I my old places a neighbor had some steer in the field behind my place. One day one of my dogs was standing at the fence barking at the steer. One of them backed up to the fence and crapped right on her head. She was mad at the act but proud of the smell.

I watch my old dog do a barrel roll right through some horseE36 M3. Right after a bath, natch.

My border collie/lab likes to roll in the chicken poop. The theory is (that I know) that it's instinctual behaviour to cover up their scent for hunting purposes.

Eh, it's like when human deer hunters do all that "scent control" stuff. Still predators at heart. To bend an old Southern Boy saying..."That dog WILL hunt."

EDIT: Zombie, ya beat me to it again! Man, I'm so tired of the evening shift..

Seal poop. We were once walking along the beach and our little, long-haired mutt rolled in what could only have been seal poop. The droppings of an all saltwater-meat diet is a whole other level of special smells.

Not exactly the same thing, but certainly the same line of thinking:

My dog finds something really stinky to lay in every couple days. Our yard is too large to figure out where he's doing it, and I've never smelled anything like this any other place. Really makes you gag. He gets a lot of baths...

My sisters dog rolled in a decomposing seagull once. Man that stink was hard to get off!

my mom lives on a farm that has a river running thru it... i've seen their dog drag dead fish up to the yard just to roll in it... dead snakes are another favorite.. and we won't even get into the "afterbirth jerky" that she likes to gnaw on and roll around on every spring when the 30 or so calves are born...

So is that the reason other dogs do it as well, or just your breed? Mine's a Golden Retriever, FWIW.

All canines are, at their cores, hunters. So yes, it is the same for all dog breeds. Every single breed will chase a squirrel.

Of all the dogs I've had, this is the first one to do this. And yes, they all chased squirrels.

I was spraying some stout 2,4-D weed killer in the yard one day, and my dog ran up and did a barrel roll right where I had just sprayed.

Our German Shepard doesnt so much like to roll in stinky stuff as eat horse poo. We are always yelling at her to stop.

My dog also would go under an old boat that I had inverted in the back yard and sift cat turds out of the sand. He could also find them in the mulched flower beds in the front yard.

We live on a farm so poo is a given, but still our border collie finds things to roll in that will make you throw up regularly. I've yet to find the source.

In reply to DaveEstey:

That's my problem. The stuff my dog rolls in will make you gag, but I cannot find where he's doing it. My hunch is that it is raccoon or deer poop, but I really don't know. It always has little scraps of leaves in it, and we have a lot of natural areas that have leaves covering the ground, so it's virtually impossible to figure out where and what he's getting into. He's otherwise about the most perfect dog I could ask to have, so I guess I should be happy...but I'm not.

Bravenrace, if you think that's porn, you've got other issues besides a smelly dog...
