Javelin's dream job thread and the Cadillac CT4/5 thread up in GRM got me asking:

What is your dream job?

I have a pretty badass job currently but there are two jobs that I would call my dreams:

Astronaut is for sure one. I would love to go to space and have ever since I was a kid in the '70s.

The more realistic job though is from the Caddy thread.

I would like to build high end engines and affix my name to each motor I built. I would nerd out on all of the dimensions and interferences/tolerances. Each would be perfect before I "signed" the build.

But, at 50 and eyeing retirement in 10 years, I'll stay where I'm at.

Hi preach (fs)

I learned today that Space-X is planning the first all civilian flight.

You need to make a donation (no minimum) to St. Jude Children's Hospital to be eligible.

That's all I know about it so mix up some Tang, throw some money at a good cause and let us know how you make out.

Added later...

gearheahotaku, we're talking dream job, consider aiming a little higher than photography with something like, well...shagging (Austin Powers - yeah baby yeah).

Once a week I drive half an hour to a building.  In that building is a button.  The button needs to be pressed at 10AM and 6PM every day, my day is moved once every two months.

Button pushing gives 2.5 days off per month which can be saved up until you have 90 days, then you have 30 days of use-lose, and pays $80,000 per year after taxes.  Health care is included.

My dream job would be screwing around with random projects that I rarely/never complete, with zero worries about cost, outcome, or time/space constraints.

Semi truck driver and cook (but not manager, mechanic, logistics. etc) of a superbike race team is #1

(Why bikes?  I dont even really like bikes.  But it seems like less to haul and more to enjoy.  Off Road Racing team would also be fine

Idea man (not a manager, not an owner) at a high end fab shop that does our own custom build cars and trucks and sells them on would be #2.

Working at a small bike store as a mechanic/salesperson would be #2, but I get to set my own hours and travel to different jobs/races/events would be #3

Volunteer mechanic for a nonprofit fixing cars and small engines would be #4

Running a junk yard would be #5.

My dream job is nothing.  I don't want to work, i want to spend time with my wife and kids and friends.  I'm like office space, if i had a million dollars i would do nothing.

I would like to have a hobby shop.

Something that did enough business to take care of itself.

Of course, I would have to already have the money to take care of myself. frown

For real, for real, I'd like to own a CNC-engineering/fabrication and attached traditional machine shop with enough money in the account to be able to do cool E36 M3.  For example, for the machine shop I'd offer a discount on projects that are not normal.  "If I haven't seen it, 20% off.  If I have no idea where to start, 50% off" kind of thing.

I've always wanted to own some sort of company that required me to also own forklifts, large trucks, maybe cranes, a Bobcat or two, that kind of thing.  Basically just so I could shop for, purchase, and play with them when my employees weren't looking.  I've never been able to develop my business plan past that point.

If we're talking dream jobs as in not likely possible to ever happen... I'd just want to be paid to do nothing.

I have a great job now and wouldn't want to change it much.

I ran one for 12 years. Fun job except for one small problem. I couldn't figure out how to make it work without the berkeleying customers.

Retail sucks.

Ideally I'd drive one of the trucks that brings relief supplies into various breaking disasters around the globe. It ties together a bunch of my interests, traveling, helping people, driving in unusual conditions, and solving complicated logistic problems on the run. A couple times a year I'd vacation driving support trucks in rally raids like the Dakar. I've given some thought to doing this once I retire.

Considering how frequently people tell me that I have their dream job, it wasn't really my first choice.

Goal number one was to be a world class harness racing trainer and driver.

After I got into college, I decided I really wanted to teach. I applied to vet school so that my dad would quit bugging me about it. I didn't expect to get an interview, but since I did I figured I would have fun with it.

What would be my dream job today?

Easy, a philanthropist. Instead of being paid, my job would be giving money away.

My dream job is whatever the berkeley I want. But you have to have a lot of money for that.

Realistically, my dream jobs are either impossible (pro athlete) unrealistically "nice" (I.e you don't see the work, just the nice part of it), or don't pay enough (caddie, lifeguard).

I was never going to be a pro athlete. I realize that now, that even if I had put in the effort, I never ever would have made the NHL (or even the AHL), MLB, or PGA.

But... I'm 31. I started refereeing hockey at 18. Had I started at 14, I could have very realistically been in the NHL today. Unlikely, but definitely plausible. That is my dream job that I sorta wish I'd done things differently to give myself a chance at it.

EDIT: Also, if it weren't for that whole "dealing with people retail" thing of it, I'd love to run a guitar shop, hockey shop, or golf shop.

Stay at home dad.

I'm not talkin the "sit around, drink beer, because i can be in the garage all day" type of dad...

I want the full on, "time to get up, i made ya breakfast, here are your lunches, have a good day at work sweetie,  clean the entire place, do the yard work, near daily grocery shopping, take a little me time with the project car before i walk the kids home with one on my shoulders, help with homework, dont worry sweetie, i got dinner." Type.  I would rock the hell out of that and love every second of it.

Otherwise, working on the jets out here in Hungary is a close enough second.
