And it sucked. Bad.
Terrible road. Badly marked, easy to make the wrong turns and end up on another road.
Road condition is completely appalling. 30-40mph speed limit the entire way, but my Miata was not capable of even meeting the limits without me seriously fearing for the well-being of my car. I think i averaged about 15mph.
Oh, and LA can eat an entire pallet of hootuses.
On the flip side, the trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara taking CA-1 as much as possible is downright incredible.
I'm in the possibly unique situation where i'll have run CA-1, The Mulholland, and US-129 all in the same month in the same car, so... final verdict will come at the end of the month, but i'm ready to go ahead and crown CA-1 the winner of those 3.

Yeah, lots of potholes and debris.
We found a road in Santa Barbara called "Camino Cielo" - highly recommend.
http://www.dangerousroads.org/usa/840-camino-cielo-road-usa.html that was just spectacular. There are patchy sections but traffic was next to non-existent.

Never driven that road, but I'll agree as to the whole of LA.
I'll also say you are totally spoiled if you haven't yet driven the "roads" in Flint and Detroit as Bryce mentioned in that other thread. Try it one time, just for fun. Keep the doors locked, though.
Wait till you have to take the 405 freeway, it sucks big time. I was doing 60 in the S2000 and thought my head was going to explode. It has so many ripples that you feel your brain is about to explode.
You drove through Fort Bragg and didnt stop by for a beer? Dang.
But if you squint your eyes real hard you can imagine it before all the houses were built on it and realize why it got the reputation in the first place.

Yes, Topanga Canyon makes me want to abandon the car, run away, and live like a hippy playing Joni Mitchell songs and baking artisan bread for the rest of my days.

I drove it years ago in a Corsica rental car, so my expectations were low from the get-go.

Detroit has roads with corners? Belle Isle and Palmer park excluded, none come to mind.

Same here buy it was a Fox based Merc. Capri rental. It was the early 80's. I also drove Rt 1 from LA to Laguna Seca on that same trip.
I am not sure Mulholland is the shiznit, but some of the canyon road the branch off from can get pretty crazy.

You REALLY want to find a way to get on #2 (Angeles Crest Highway) through the Angeles Forest. Fantastic.
I drove Mulholland in an MR2 Turbo--back when that was a brand-new car. I went up and back in the middle of the day. Honestly, I don't remember traffic being that bad.
Here's some light reading on the glory days of Mulholland:

Seriously, like so many things time has moved on.
Hit me up when you think you'll get to the Dragon. I'd like to make fun of you for driving a girls car in person, then I'll by you a beer.
Yup Mulholland is not like what it used to be. The roads on the Angeles and Los Padres National Forrest are pretty awesome.

Great site thanks for posting it! Should be great for trips
Looked for local roads and found some of my favorites and that the city's real name I have been driving through all these is years is "hell town"
king of the mountain movie
Only driving roads I know of in the Flint/Detroit area are either closer to Ann Arbor or Fenton. Nowhere in the city proper, unless you count the miles of basically abandoned roads in Detroit.

I've been to Detroit and Ann Arbor countless times, but a couple of years ago went with GM up to Traverse City. Wow! I had no idea Michigan could be so beautiful. The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes and Leland's fish town were breathtaking. Wonderful driving roads around there too, if you go in the off-season.

Yeah, I know of some really wild dirt stuff near Chelsea (If you've ever run the Son of snodrift TSD, you know what I'm talking about). But nothing paved anywhere near SE MI of any real interest besides the Belle Isle GP circuit.
according to what Car and Driver has taught me. Mulholland is purposely kept in E36 M3ty condition, to keep street racers off of it and lessen the amount of vehicle recoveries they have to conduct.

Told ya. I hate that area. There's supposedly some nice roads up north that lead nowhere, though.
In reply to Lesley:
NW/N Michigan is freakin' stunning. Road quality is pretty suprising, too. Lots of nice roads up there if one's willing to explore. Haven't had a car worthwhile to flog up there, yet. Usually just go up there riding shotgun in my dad's truck to go ATV'ing.
