(CBS/AP) - Police in Catawba, North Carolina went to former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield's house on Tuesday night with a search warrant to follow up a tip that there might be stolen property on the house. What they found was a trove of illegal goods, including methamphetamine, forty firearms and nearly $100,000 worth of stolen goods. Mayfield was arrested on possession of methamphetamine, but the latest reports reveal what else officials found on the scene.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office told CBS affiliate WBTV that detectives found dozens of guns, 1 ½ grams of meth and a number of items that had been reported stolen from a trucking company in Lincolnton, N.C.

The firearms ranged from antique guns to high-powered rifles. The guns are currently being run through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Fireams and Explosives gun tracing system to determine if any were reported stolen.

The stolen goods included heavy machinery, scrap metal, welders, engraving machines and electric motor components.

All the goods were reported stolen by two trucking companies: Lee Boy Inc. and Larry Grant Inc.

Tom Weese, of Lee Family Real Estate, LTD, told WBTV that roughly $65,000 worth of items were stolen from his business last year. He recovered most of his goods Tuesday night after Mayfield's arrest.

"To me they were just thieves," Weese told WBTV. "They just wanted to steal stuff."

The investigation is still ongoing, and Weese believes there will be more arrests to come.

"It wouldn't even be possible for one man to conduct an operation like this," he said. "It's unbelievable that the operations they had going on down there."

Mayfield was suspended from NASCAR indefinitely after failing a random drug test in May 2009. The result stemmed from a test at Richmond International Raceway.

The driver's career began in 1994, and Mayfield posted multiple top-ten finishes throughout his career. His best year was 1997, when he finished 13th in total points driving for former Ford executive and NASCAR team owner Michael Kranefuss.

Following his suspension, Mayfield denied reports that he was using illegal drugs and claimed the results of this test were not accurate. In unsuccessful legal challenges, he claimed the results turned up positive because he took over-the-counter allergy medicine and Adderal for his Attention Deficit Disorder.

Mayfield is currently out of jail on a $3,000 bond.

Crystal meth seems to be a very powerful thing. I've never enjoyed being berkeleyed up from anything. Obviously there is an appeal there for some...

I don't have any problems with users other than driving a large and well armed business. what you do on your time is not my business.

Never really been into drugs. I'll admit to having smoked weed a couple times, but not in at least 3 years. Alchohol once every couple weeks or so, but I could just as easily go months without it.

My only crack addiction is the purple crack!

Like wb, I messed with pot etc and tried harder stuff a couple of times. Racing motorcycles kept me from getting too deep into that crap. My mom still shivers when I talk about racing anything, but if she only knew what some of my friends had gotten into she would probably have financed a run at F1 for me. Wish I'd thought of that back then....

I've known several people ruined by meth. Some eventually got themselves clean, but the damage is done. Some never will.

At what point does an individual, juvenile or adult think it's actually a good idea to try meth or crack? ... and especially a talented guy who got the breaks into the big time like Mayfield. I know there are no warning labels of addiction but... duh.

One of my friends(who eventually cleaned up after 2x in jail for ~4-years each, and a stroke) told me years ago(when he was still on it), that meth was the only thing that saved him from ODing on coke.

Scary stuff.

I've only ever done pot, and haven't done that in... I honestly can't tell you the last time I did it. Maybe 3 mos., 6 mos., maybe a year. I am a vehement supporter of marijuana, but if it were legal I wouldn't smoke more than 2-4 times a year. Enjoyed it enough to try it again, not enough to make a habit of it.

I've never tried anything beyond drinking, but after being given morphine in ICU after a car accident I can see how I could have been hooked on it. I went from being in killer pain to watching in go up my arm into my ticker, then I spent two days talking to Grimace. When ever the nurse hit that button I was on another field trip to some wonderful alternate world.

What does meth do to you to make it so addicting? Having never done anything stronger that pot, and now reacting very badly to it, I can't understand why they do it. Same goes for crack. Everybody knows how destructive they are, but more and more people seem to get hooked. Please, educate me.

I'm not sure what the deal is about that. I think it has a lot ot do with the individual's body chemistry. The statute of limitations has run out, so here's my personal tale: a good friend from several years ago turned into a cokehead. I wasn't interested and started distancing myself but one weekend we wound up hanging out on a Saturday and I finally tried it. My heart rate went up but that was about it. OTOH, his eyes would light up and he'd start rubbing his chin at the very mention of coke. Hard to believe two people could have such wildly different reactions to the same exact thing. His reaction was spooky so after all that I distanced myself even more. When I moved away from Columbia, he and I lost touch completely.

I now find out that he died ten years ago, I can't find any information as to why, all of our mutual friends seem to have disappeared. Another good friend started snorting coke, ended up a crackhead and died of an overdose and this is a guy I used to race motorcycles with. If you had known him you'd say 'that's the last guy who would ever let that happen'. But it did.

I also have two members of my extended family who have been 'dried out' a couple of times for drinking and abusing prescription painkillers. Again, I have had pain pills prescribed but I do not like the feeling and keep it to a bare minimum. They also do not seem to have a great effect on me and I nearly had to cancel a dentist appointment once because the pain meds they gave me to take that morning had little to no effect. The desk nurse asked me if I had taken them and I said yes, her eyes got big and she said, 'Doctor, we have a problem....'

I sometimes shudder when I think that the one time I tried toot I had no way of knowing in advance how deeply it might affect me, in short I was playing with fire and IMHO it was only a lucky coincidence of genetics which kept me from falling off that cliff.

Not sure on meth, I was never interested in trying something that was made by a crackhead in his bathtub or whatever.

If it's like the more popular white stuff so fashionable in the 80s, I kind of understand as I did that a few times in college.

It gets you UP. Tons of energy, you feel great, motivated, etc etc.

I want to use meth long enough to lose 50 pounds and get all my overdue car maintenance done, but not long enough that my teeth start to fall out.

Those kind of all-consuming addictions are a symptom. There's always an underlying problem dealing with life, hence the need to anesthetize. Happy, well-adjusted people rarely turn into addicts.
