I believe much of it was actually shot in 70mm

That's what I'm reading, all 15/70 (Imax) or 5/70, no digital intermediate!

Of course the movie was cut and SFX added on a digital video editing system, and the movie will almost certainly be sent as a digital video file to your local theatre. The pixels may be too small for you to see, but make no mistake, they have defiled your precious film

(Just doing my part to strangle videophilia in the cradle!)

As I understand it, they were very lucky the germans had run out of steam blowing through france which gave them enough of a reprieve to get out. Cool movie - that the action is the main character instead of following a couple of people's story lines.

the war would have been a lot worse if the Brits had not gotten their men out. While it was a retreat, it gave them time to lick their wounds

All my local theaters are still running E36 M3ty 2K projectors, I can occasionally catch a glimpse of the screen door in those places sitting halfway back without my contacts in. Of course this is still better than the previous system at such places where dumb teenagers did their best to scratch, dirty, and generally mangle 35mm.

Van Hoytema says Nolan wanted to do as much as possible in-camera, both for the sake of realism and also to maintain the look of the film. He explains that digital effects (created at Double Negative) were “scanned into the computer and then filmed out to film. But with that process, you will not sustain the quality of the original Imax negative.” They also chose to skip the digital color grading (digital intermediate) process and instead do only lab color timing for the film version.

Our little local theater has 4K DLP's and 4 million way sound. It's amazing because matinee's are $6.25

Went to see it with my son. We both liked it but neither of us was crazy about the "time jump" stuff.

Also, the one Spit pilot always shooting 1/2 second late was making us both crazy. Has this guy never played "Birds of Steel"?

I would have liked to see a bit more aggressive flying for the fighting sequences, they had a bit of a casual appearance and didn't seem to be pulling any g's. I am sure there were many fights ended up like that as the pilots lost altitude and energy, but it would have been nice to see some nice high energy stuff to start it out.

I was also a bit confused by what seemed to be the gunner sounds from the He-111. It sounded like a slow firing cannon. He-111 only had machine guns.

The film seemed to use a minimum of CGI, which I love. In some scenes you could see the rear struts on the Me109, which where present on the E models of that period. I was wondering how they did that, as the only available 109's currently are Merlin engined versions of latter models build in Spain after the war. It appears be with the use of large RC models. Dunkirk – Filming the Aerial Scenes for the Epic Movie It looks like the He-111 was only a model also. There is a very brief appearance of a Blenheim bomber (pretty sure) that I assume was a model also.

Absolutely worth seeing in large-screen IMAX. I saw it at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle on their gigantor IMAX screen. The massive screen, good image contrast, and powerful sound work wonders for immersion.

Theirs isn't a proper 70mm film projector any more, but instead a fancy 8k dual projector setup that uses lasers instead of xenon arc lamps. I saw Interstellar there a few years ago on film, and I'm not convinced that this setup is any worse.

In reply to java230:

I read that something like 75% of it was shot on 70mm IMAX.

Another Seattle guy? The Boeing iMax is about as good as it gets around here. 4dx was cool tho, but small screen.

Good to know since it will be a 6 hour round trip to see it. I probably would have seen it locally but I get to hang out with Dad and neither of us are getting any younger.

I saw Dunkirk Wednesday night, at the IMAX.

It's the kind of movie Dad would have taken teenage me to see. That really is saying something.

Went to see it on the weekend, it was OK, a slow-paced middle section kind of lets down the rest of the movie.

Late to the event but went to see it tonight. Powerful movie that really nailed the despair the soldiers felt trapped on the beach.

I simply can't imagine what it must have been like, and I'm fairly certain nothing like it will ever happen again. War has changed following WW2 and the scale of conflict just isn't the same anymore. (A good thing to be sure!)
