I'd suggest looking here:

If we're lucky it's been put somewhere else for the next round of the game. If we're not lucky, it's been stolen to go in somebody's private collection...or maybe the mothership came back and picked it up
One of the people who travelled to it said it sounded like a cardboard box when he knocked on it, rather than like an oil drum as you might've expected, so the skin is not sheet metal but some other material with a metallic coating, maybe coroplast?
Saw something on reddit that said it was in Romania now. Didn't follow up though.

Of all the references in this thread this is the only one I recognize. Am I the only one?
According to @thegambler500 on ig, it was unceremoniously dismantled and stolen.
By the sound of it, the folks who removed it would likely describe themselves as "environmental protectors" rather than thieves or artists. Of course, this is from someone I don't know, shared on social media, so who knows.
A Second Mystery Monolith Has Appeared (thecut.com)
It reappeared, then disappeared again.

Confirmed, it was removed by environmental activists:

Government likely would've done the same thing eventually...
I think it could have been handled way better. Obviously it had been in place for a long time. I would argue that the damage caused by folks trying to find it was less the fault of whoever left it there and more the fault of the officials releasing "hey look at this mysterious thing we found"
A very cropped photo and a caption "if this is yours, please remove it before we do" and no mention of how or where it was found would have been way more responsible.
The answer is simple, the illuminati had finished the Earth 2020 update and removed the flash drive.

I find myself quite lost when any pop culture reference post 1990 shows up here. It iS KinD oF a pOinT of PrIde FoR me. And, I have absolutely no idea what I just referenced with the odd capitalization, but I presume it's something to make a 60 year old guy feel out of place.
In reply to barefootskater (Shaun) :
From a different perspective: someone left litter in the desert for FIVE YEARS before someone was kind enough to spend their own time and money to clean it up. That clean up removed the reason that hundreds of people were rushing to the area and causing damage that won't be fixed for many, many years.

Worst update since Vista.

I get that, but the fact remains that it wasn't an issue until the news was leaked *by an environmental agency*. It shouldn't have been there, but it should have been handled very differently.
I generally applaud the removal.
In reply to barefootskater (Shaun) :
Yeah, I'm also not thrilled about that. All the attention is/was way worse than the actual monolith itself. That's why a lot of people have stopped geotagging pretty outdoors photos.
