Beginning today I'm on a rad trip, decent places to enjoy a meal on Interstate 80 between Denver and Vermont heading east. Final stop today Omaha. Go.

And mostly just posting so I can watch this thread. No real knowledge of that route or the meany treasures that lie within. You pretty much have to get a tenderloin sandwich in Indiana, though.

There is a place in downtown Buffalo run by a couple of hippie chicks that make really good stuff.

If you are pressed for time, you are screwed. Its road food or nothing. We stopped in Buffalo after 3 days of McBurgerarbys and really enjoyed the couple of hours it cost.

I have found some good BBQ in Kansas City. Other than that it is greasy spoons or franchises. Greasy spoons can vary by who is cooking at the time and franchises are franchises.

I am a little jelly, you have White Castles on the way, no WC in the PHX or west.

Portillo's in Chicago. There is one ~2 miles north of 80 in Tinley Park off 43 (right near where I57 intersects 80). It's pretty tasty and fast. Italian beef/hot dogs/chocolate cake Shake

Usually I won't take sides in matters of personal taste, but Krystal > White Castle. It's barely a contest. I've pushed some pretty suspect garbage down my throat and just kind of shrugged it off, but I just don't get the White Castle love when Krystal exists. Sure, you have to come to the South, which has its own drawbacks, but you get Krystals! And Bojangles!

The only advice I can give you is that if you are traveling across the US in search of food don't use the interstate at all. Not one restaurant I can think of to recommend is close to the highway or an easy off/on. If you just want something that stays down long enough to poop it out - get a CB and ask the truckers where they prefer.

No detour will be needed. In Chicago I-80 and I90 will become the same road and remain that same road across Indiana and half of Ohio. Just before Cleveland they will again split and I-90 will be the road to VT. Therefore, you will be on I-90 right through the downtown of Cleveland.

In Cleveland, 14 blocks west of the center of town at W.14th and Abby you will find Sokolowski's University Inn actually at 1201 University Rd Cleveland OH. You had better have a GPS or set your phone to find it because due to the fact that it sits on the river bank (river ledge) and then the expressway cutting through and the bridges, it is not that easy to get to but it is rewarding to find.
You can see I-90 from the parking lot but getting to I-90 is another story.

Polish Comfort Food like Perogis, Stuffed Cabbage, Chicken Paprikas, etc in a "cafateria" like serving setting in a historic (old) building overlooking the city skyline from high atop a perch.

If you do not go for Sokolowski's then here is another completely different recommendation 1 hour West of Cleveland.

In my hometown of Sandusky and 7 miles due North of Exit 118 of The Ohio Turnpike (I80 & I-90 still at this point) is a surpirsingly very good and authentic Vietnamese Restaurant named Mekong.
Family owned, sit down service restaurant is about 4 years old. The Vietnamese family that owns it moved here from Richmond, VA to open this location. This location is therefore related to the Richmond, VA location.

My personal favorite is the Spicy Beef Basil.
Also cant go wrong with Chicken Lemongrass.
Pho is great if your looking for a soup.

One hour before Sandusky, OH you will be cutting through Toledo, OH. This is the home of Tony Packo's Opened in 1932, this was sort of a bar and grill opened by a Hungarian imigrant named Tony Packo.
To get to the original location would be a 10 miles diversion up I-280 in the Toledo area, but...

There is a satellite location just 2 miles off The Ohio Turnpike Exit 59 which is located in The Anderson's General Store which is another unique and worderful Toledo original. Located at 530 Illinois Ave Maumee, OH 43537, The Andersons started as a rural farmers needs store and grain elevator. It is now one of the largest handlers of grain this side of the Miss. for its Ag operations. The retail store is a combination of full hardware (like LowesDepot) and full grocery with giant meat/deli/bakery depts along with much of what BedBath Beyond has for the home plus appliances and some furnature. Also a pets dept.

The have a Packos in the lobby.
The house specialties are chili dogs (the meat is a Hungarian Sausage)
Also famous for Cabbage Rolls (a beef,meatloaf-like center then wrapped in cabbage and cooked in stewed tomatos)
And, Chicken Paprikas (I've had better)

I'd recommend 1 Cabbage Roll w/ a side of Pakrikas noodles and 1 Chili dog. This will set you back about $10-$12

This.

And I like the little sign on the window at my local one that reads: "We fry our E36 M3 in peanut oil because it makes everything taste better. If you're allergic to berkeleying peanuts, maybe you deserve to die. Thanks, mgmt."

Or something to that effect.

I have to assume this is meant to be some kind of edgy comedy bit because there's no way anyone can think Krystal's is better than White Castle. I've tried them several times now and all I can think of is that a couple boys came up to a big city probably delivering 'shine or bail dad out of the hoosegow and had stopped at a White Castle. They went home and tried to explain it to someone who explained it to someone else. The end result is a small square burger that looks kinda right but the taste is wrong, the onions are wrong, and there's mustard on it.

Yeah, piece o' cake, if you're switching from the Turnpike to I-90 then you're leaving the Turnpike just west of there.
