I'm thinking of making some last-minute plans to head south and see the eclipse if I can with my daughter.

Probably the best area for me would be somewhere rural between Carbondale Illinois and Nashville Tennessee. I'm thinking maybe we will drive down Sunday night to somewhere a bit north of that zone (nowhere nearby will have camping sites open I think) and head down early Monday for eclipse viewing.

Anybody know a good hilltop to view from in the area that is less likely to be full of people?

In reply to Erich:

There's a nice hill on I-57 south of Marion, IL which is east of Carbondale about 15-miles. There's an exit for a small town just before it, and another on the other side of the gully just south of it. No idea how many people may be there, but they're tiny exits in the middle of BFE. There's also a state park off one of the exits - Feyrn Clyffe or some odd spelling like that. Never been there, but I imagine if it has good viewpoints they'll likely be packed anyway.

We're gonna drive down that morning from Lexington and head to somewhere between Hopkinsville and Nashville. Heck, I'd bet the TN welcome center on I-65 will be a pretty good spot to view it from (and might even have a front row seat to interstate derby drama from oblivious motorists).

Here...stare at this for a while...it'll make you go blind just like staring at that other Eclipse...

Hey all, just checking in again if anyone has advice. My daughter and I will be camping the day before the eclipse near Shelbyville, Il. Then on the morning of the 21st we're heading south on 65 towards Marion.

If anyone has any specific suggestions of spots to hang out for a few hours near Marion I'm all ears. Thanks!
