Sorry guys, but you are my last hope... Star Wars? Anyway, we have a customer who has a 1998 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L and has a broken dipstick tube and missing dipstick. Obsolete part, not available anywhere, not even any local junkyards have them.
So I come to you guys asking for help. Anyone have something like this? How much do you want for it?
I love you in advance...
Brian
He changed his own spark plugs and either left it unbolted or snapped it off or both. Brought it in for an oil leak and missfiring. Yes, oil dipstick. LOL My bad.
Wouldn't that also be the same as a F150? Try looking for one of those in a junkyard.
Different engine. F150's had a 4.2. The Explorer family was the only ones with the 4.0 in that configuration if memory serves. Mustangs had the 3.8 in that era, but the 4.0 used later is a completely different engine.
I don't think F150s came with the 4.0L. What about the Ranger/Mazda B4000? I would guess it would be similar enough to work...

YES! You're right. Still, can't find anything local...
Are you sure no other engine has a matching dipstick?
Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series
Ford Explorer/Mazda Navajo
Cross Lander 244X
Ford Aerostar (1990–1997)
SOHC
2001–2011 Ford Ranger
2001–2010 Mazda B4000
1997–2010 Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer
2005–2010 Ford Mustang
2005–2009 Land Rover LR3
Any luck on these? (note, some might not cross fit)
This is a cam in block motor.
What about the Aerostar?
(wait, I had one.. IIRC its longer to reach up the firewall)
What kind of time line are you on? There are a few Explorers in my local pick-n-pull. (1) 1998, (1) 1999, (2) 2000. I don't know the first thing about the 4.0 though - would any Explorer with a v6 from that generation be a 4.0?

I'm shocked that a dipstick and guide tube for a 14-year old Ford is NLA. I guess I've been spoiled by BMW's parts catalog....
Go to your favorite city CL.
Under "auto parts" but in the keyword "Explorer".
You will find many being parted out. Contact seller and do not tip your hand that the part is otherwise hard to find.
Dunno... I'll see if I can get Parts to cooperate with me...

Yes, they're all a 4.0, but you have to make sure you're getting the one from the pushrod motor and not the OHC motor. PM me if you can with your contact info.

Thanks, but that's an OHC motor, E engine code. This one is an X engine code that we need.

PM Sent. If there's a way to tell the difference between the OHC and pushrod motors let me know.
Keep in mind I'm in Ohio so shipping would take a few days. If I made it to the junkyard today or tomorrow, and they had the right part, you could probably plan on having it by Wednesday next week if I sent it USPS.

Replied to ya. Thanks a ton!!!
Fwiw, I've made my own before. Copper tubing and a piece of wire.
Drain and refill the crankcase. Mark the fabricated dipstick at the oil level.
Crude, but it works.

So, the guy probably doesn't check his oil anyway.

See if Mazda still services this part for a B4000 pickup.
