Yes, I know, it's the middle of the stockbroker belt and housing is expensive .

I'm talking to a small company out there that has an interesting job open in a field that I worked in over a decade ago. Not sure if this is going anywhere but I figured I'd get at least some idea what the area is like.

I assume that rust free cars isn't something that's in strong supply out there? What about emissions, registration and all that fun stuff?

And yes, I already figured out that it's about 2h to Lime Rock .

Did you know it's expensive? Like, $4 gas expensive.

I'm least familiar with that corner of the state. I'm right in the middle. It's not bad here - there's lots to do, NY and Boston are close by, and there is plenty of quiet countryside and nice driving roads. New Haven is a cool town. Lots of interesting things spread out all across the state. Speed enforcement is fairly relaxed, and you get a nice variety of machines on the road, anything from new exotics to classic restorations and even a few tattered survivors from time to time.

Emissions testing gets done about every 2 years for most cars, with a sliding 25 year-old cutoff. $20 for a test, one free retest if you fail. I don't remember registration being bad. You will pay property tax on your vehicles.

Lime Rock is just as awesome as you're imagining it.

My son works in Greenwich and lives in Norwalk. Expensive? I'm sure Nevada has ways of getting their hands in your pockets we never thought of. Housing is high, Greenwich has a surprising number of young people with disposable income. Cab drivers in NYC don't drive as bad as Connecticut folk.

Most communities have trains into NYC if you have to get into the city, it's not horrible.

I can put you in touch with my son if you'd like, shoot me a PM.

That's called "California" out here .

I've driven it in iRacing, I'll want to drive it IRL at some point!

Here's what you need to know about CT:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimpowell/2013/08/01/how-did-rich-connecticut-morph-into-one-of-americas-worst-performing-economies/

We live in Newtown, and I commute to Stamford five days a week. Property taxes on vehicles and housing are very high, and as mentioned, housing is extremely expensive. Schools are generally very good, especially in Fairfield county.

Gas prices are among the highest in the nation. Personal income tax also takes a good chunk of your income. Traffic around Stamford/Greenwich is pretty brutal, for example my 30 mile commute took 1.5 hours this morning, and half of it is back roads.

The Spring and Fall seasons are beautiful, A/C is a must for the summer (but nothing compared to Nevada). Winters can be brutal, and we've had our share of hurricanes/ice storms/heavy snow storms over the past few years.

Rust-free vehicles are a quick trip to DC/Virginia away, and you can find the occasional garaged gem locally. Someone already covered emissions and registration costs, which aren't that bad. Secondary roads are not very well-maintained, and potholes are very common, as the roads take a beating in the winter.

My wife and I talk about moving somewhere else on a regular basis. If it wasn't for 95% of our immediate and extended family members living within the state, we'd be long gone.

If you want any more detailed info, shoot me a PM and ask away.

Apart from the cost of car registration, it's pretty good out here if one stays out of the casinos.

I did notice the housing cost and that might be a bit of an issue; anything that was vaguely in our price range and ticked most of the boxes was pretty far from the Stamford/Greenwich areas.

The job would be in CT, but from what I can tell by poking around Zillow, I'd probably have to commute for 25+ miles each way. Not that that's any different from what I do now.

Thanks Dan, I'll be in touch if this goes anywhere.

Gas prices in Stamford/Greenwich are through the roof compared to the rest of CT, as well. In Newtown, premium is $4.17 a gallon. In Stamford, it's $4.59.

Just to give you a real-world example. In the middle of the state an 1800 sq ft house with 3 beds, 1.5 baths on a half acre is roughly 200k. Same house in our town is roughly 300k. Same house in Stamford is about 430k. In Greenwich, it's a 500k house.
